I did use one back in the DOS Days but under Windows I no longer see a need for one.

RAM disks are basically using a application to "partition" a chuck of your system ram and use it like a hard disk for certain applications. Crystal Disk performance tests are showing speeds in the neighborhood of 8 times that of a Samsung 850 Evo, and this was on an X79 with 2133. It is REALLY fast, however, I have not seen much of a need for it personally. Likely one day I will mess with it for the heck of it, just to learn and try something. But in the end I think it is little more than a crazy fast novelty.

there are free programs on the web you can use to create ram disks. I'm using the one that came with my motherboard.
If you use my code let me know so i can thank you via pm.

I use it frequently to install FPS/Simulator games on it (52GB Ramdisk / 12GB for system RAM). The only real use I see is faster loading games. For example, if you have a good internet connection, you can be the first to join a Battlefield server in the first round of a map and pick the vehicle that you like more. The good: - Insane disk speed (linear and random) performance. The bad: - You must load the ramdisk when your computer starts up, and if a pacth come to the game, you must save the disk or next time you will need to download it again, LOL. If you want to load the images faster, you will need a SSD at minimun recomended (I use a RAID 0 of 4 x samsung Evo 850 for faster image load). - Today games eat a lot of disk space, so a game that uses 30GB of disk, will eat 30GB in form of a .iso image, so you need big SSD capacity to load the images fast. If your ramdisk is not than bigger, some ramdisk programs let use them as hard disk cache, accelerating the most used files in yor system, caching them.

Sorry I missed that large amount of RAM? I think I need another source of income. Retirement just does not cut it.

I would rather put my money towards a M.2 drive.

The M.2 pci-e based ones are really faster. I would like to see some raid 0 benchies from them. I built my system when the i7-3930K was released, so no M.2 drives then.

That is correct but with SSDs and PCI-E SSDs becoming faster there really isn't a need anymore for a ramdisk.
