The girlfriend and I decided to adopt a Rescue from the local SPCA over the weekend...  He was picked up as a stray but knows basic commands and is very mild mannered, someone definitely took their time training him.

Holding him on his first night in his new home!

Is he Bull mix? I've always wanted a French bulldog but prob wouldn't want all the vet visits that come from a full breed vs a good healthy mutt(mix). Still love to get a Boxxer one day, if I had a yard :)

We think he is a mix between an American Bulldog and a Bull Mastiff.

He ought to be a great dog and with the kids. Make sure ya runn/walk him daily, good for you better for him, and just make sure you train him right. I've seen too many dog owners, let alone the bad rap bulls/pits get, when it's the owns that need to be put in a cage....

Edit, I bet he ends ups being 150lbs :)

Grats on the addition man!! I gotta give you a huge thank you and pat on the back for getting a rescue dog. Believe me when I say this, dogs that get dumped at the pound ,for whatever reasons, do remember it and are affected by it, imo probably because of the pack mentality mostly. So when they get re-homed they tend to be the best, most obedient dogs with great personality's. Ive seen it time and time again. So you probably got yourself a real gem there!!!  As far as how big he'll get, I don't think hes going to get that much bigger but he will fill out quite a bit judging by his paws. From looking at the two picts that are up my guess would be hes a Pitbull/American bulldog mix. Either way, theyre both headstrong breeds and will def be fun to train, lol. :P

    Thanks guys!

When he was picked up as a stray he was about 75lbs, he has lost some weight because of some severe diarrhea since his take in date.  I could easily see him tipping the scale around 90-115lbs after he gets some poundage put on him, we have been giving him ground beef, white rice and some pumpkin puree to get his stomach settled.

We have only ever adopted doggies that need homes thus far, I would much rather give an old dog the chance to love and adore someone rather than get a puppy.  We have rescued three dogs over the years, two of which are still with us, but in their senior years.  They are still the sweetest dogs that I have ever met, and I am not only saying that because they are my own dogs either lol.

My girlfriend has experience with pits, I have always been a retriever owner, so she has him for the time being until we get a house of our own.  I just cannot get over the fact that he is two years old and is so mellow, but still knows how to play, my other two dogs would wrestle around with one another, but they never learned how to play outside of that.

He sounds like an awesome dog! That's great that he's already mellow and playfully. Y'all got any you'll younger kids, I could see him being very playfully, good attitude, and very tolerant, but protective of the kids and or family/house.

What's his name? (If I missed it)

Edit: As far as ur GF having pit experience, maybe she'll agree, pits/bull need you to be the alpha, patient, and don't lax on the rules, I'm sure he won't have any problems with y'all giving him the time he needs to be a great dog.

Well, we do not have any kids yet, but he definitely will have tone down his play-style, he does play rather rough.  He nipped her pretty good earlier while they were playing tug of war with a rope toy, he is pretty "mouthy" which is typical pit behavior.  I ran around with him after he got a bath the other day and he put his mouth around my arm but didn't bite down, our first rescue, a purebred Golden Retriever was the same way.

The shelter named him Sturgis, but we are thinking Ziggy/Ziggs.

Are you running/walking Zigg daily yet? I've had three Golden retrievers, the last one I was a 2 year-old, GR's take a few years to get out of the puppy stage, and if you didn't run/walk him daily, get ready for WW3 haha, but I started working with him, his owners didn't have a clue. They spent $5K for him as service(their kid has seizures) dogs, the owners didn't keep with the training.

I could see pit bulls being good service dogs, well certain types of service dog.

Yes, he goes out for walks several times a day by my girlfriend, her brother and her mother.  He is still very puppy-like in his mannerisms and behavior.  He has some possession/object aggression that we are working on.  Trying to desensitize him to not having to defend or fight for his food, which is not uncommon against strays, as well as try to teach him "give/drop."  He is so food driven that it should not be too much of a problem, only time will tell, but I definitely think he will break his habits lol
