I've been playing around with my Titan now for a few weeks and I've decided to move from 1080p surround to 21:9 at 3440x1440. Here's why: Acer X34.

The framerate on next-gen games like GTA5, Shadows of Mordor are pretty solid on reasonable settings, but I'm ready for the full eye candy experience and I'm thinking going to 21:9 actually reduces pixel requirements without sacrificing much immersion.

This was the X34 display that, until a few weeks ago was called the the XR341CK (what a mouthful), now it's just the X34. I'd seen everwhere that it was going to be a 75hz panel, until I ran accross this article today claiming X34 is 100hz, and the X35 is 144hz. Not sure if believe it, but the article was just posted today, so presumably they'd have the most recent info. I dunno, still skeptical, DP bandwidth and all. Can anyone confirm?

From the article:

Acer emphasizes gaming, putting its Predator branding and some extra design flourishes on its new X34 monitor. LED lights adorn the underside of the screen, allowing you to customize the rhythm of their pulsations, and the whole thing is styled in a typically aggressive and macho fashion. The company has also overclocked the refresh rate from 75Hz to 100Hz, added two DTS-certified 7W speakers, and made the stand height- and tilt-adjustable. This package won't come cheap, with Acer indicating a price of over $1,000 for a launch in August.
Basically, it says the X34 is 3440x1440 is IPS at 100hz, and the X35 is 3440x1440 is a VA panel at 144hz. That's news to me, and I've been following this stuff pretty closely.

Also, anyone else go from 1080p surround to 21:9? About the same immersion quality? Worth the reduction in width?
I'm seeing 60-75fps in GTA5 and SOM, so I'm thinking 80-90fps on 3440x1440 with the same settings.

I have been following and read that, too.  They also said that the ASUS 34" 21:9 is now at 75Hz in a different article.  Doing the math, I'm not seeing how they can get 100Hz refresh rate on DP 1.2, but maybe they know something we don't.  Some form of compression with the GSYNC v2?  Will just have to keep watching.  And, if it is true, will it still be $1299 and will it still come in August/September?

Hell, I'm happy enough with my LG 34UM95 at 60Hz, but maybe I can give that one to my wife and get this X34 instead...even at 75Hz + GSync that would be fantastic.

I'm nearly certain the X35 is 2560x1080, which means 144hz is plausible. But for the X34, I read on another website from someone that did the math, the theoretical limit of DP1.2 bandwidth (17.28 Gbit/s) at 3440x1440 would allow for a maximum of 107hz. So 100hz may be possible as well.

Yes, the X35 is 2560X1080 as per Acer. Perhaps my numbers were wrong on the X34. Will have to look again. Would be awesome for 100Hz.

    Ok, here goes:

To determine the LCD Data Rate I take the Pixels for one frame and multiply this value with the refresh rate. So I get e.g. 3440x1440x100Hz = 495,360,000 Pixels/s.

    To get the Mbit/s value, we multiply the Pixel/s with the size of one Pixel. So 495,360,000 Pixel/s x 32 Bit/Pixel = 15,851,520,000 bit/s, or roughly 15.85Gbit/s.

Displayport 1.2 can do 17.28Gbit/s,  so theoratically you could pass 3440x1440 at 100hz with 32bit color over one displayport cable. This is my amateur understanding of bandwidth, which doesn't account for frame buffers, pixel response time or any of that, but it looks like it's close, but doable, in theory.

Using that same math, 4K (3840x2160) at 60hz is 15.93Gbit/s and we know that works.

Looking at what I did before I realize now the figure was created when articles announced it was at 144Hz.  Using that frequency there wasn't enough overhead.  My mistake.

Correct, 144hz would exceed the 17.28Gbit/s limit, by a far margin. But 100hz would work. It would even be under the 4K@60hz bandwidth threshold. The problem I see is getting an IPS panel to do 100hz. The bandwidth is there, but the technology to do IPS at 100hz is questionable. And I don't know enough about IPS to offer an opinion at the refresh rate. If they made it a TN panel, it would work. As always, we'll have to wait for the final product reviews to know for sure, but it sure sounds like Acer is trying to push a 3440x1440 IPS panel at 100hz. I mean, someone has to be first...

I just hope both aren't over driven to the point that it sacrifices quality.

It is not the same panel.  And that was the first IPS panel at 2560X1440 to run at 144Hz.  No 3440X1440 has ever shown in the EDID as having anything above 60Hz without altering that file, and not all monitors would hold an overclock with the current overdrive circuits..  75Hz is a first on this resolution.  100Hz would be an even bigger change.

Could explain the long rollout and the August/September timeline. If it really does come out as a 100hz monitor, this thing is a no-brainer. Asus has one that's in direct competition with it, but at 60hz. If Acer finds a way to go 100hz, Asus will never sell their product at that pricepoint, and that's reason enough for Acer to try in my opinion.

Could you link to the video you mentioned above? Having an official rep flat out say "we're trying to make it 100hz" is very encouraging.

From over at Windowscentral, one of the bloggers stated in the comments:

    "Ostbiten
What I've read it does have 75hz not 100hz refresh rate, so this info is wrong.

    Richard Devine

Well I'm going off what someone from Acer told me while we stood together in front of it.
If I get chance tomorrow I'll go ask again for clarification.
For now, I'll just remove that reference entirely."

So reps are saying 100hz. I think it's safe to assume Acer is trying.

I can't do it from work, but if you go to YouTube and search for Acer X34 Computex 100Hz I think it will come up.  That is the Acer video.  He says it already is at 100Hz, not that they are trying.  He also says that it will be around $1200, though.  The Verge also reported the same thing on both counts.  I'm not too hip on these sites for rumors, but the fact that this rep is seemingly knowledgeable and the ASUS camp saying they are working on it at 100Hz.... hmmmm.

The ASUS is already at 75Hz.  Look at the picture I posted above showing the specs from the booth at Computex.  It already shows 75Hz.  I will have to find the link to the video for the ASUS rep saying they are trying to hit it.

    I'm 98% sure I'm in at the 75Hz.  I agree that at 100Hz I am sold.

That is the Acer video.  Trying to locate the ASUS video for you.

Awesome! Looks like Asus and Acer are in a 21:9 refresh rate war, and we'll get the benefit.

If you read that, it already shows at 75Hz on the ASUS as of Computex.

Found it.  Rep says that the monitor will have a minimum of 75Hz.  That means they are working on the 100Hz as well, as that is the comment they always give like the Swift (they always said a minimum of 120Hz and it came out 144Hz, for example).

Also, anyone else go from 1080p surround to 21:9? About the same immersion quality? Worth the reduction in width?
I'm seeing 60-75fps in GTA5 and SOM, so I'm thinking 80-90fps on 3440x1440 with the same settings.

I have both 1080P Surround @ 144hz on SLI Titan X SC.  Plus another system using Dell U3415W it's a 60hz @3440 x 1440 on SLI 4GB 680's.  I have to admit the Dell Curved is pretty nice for my Steam games that are single monitor or Unreal Engine based. Using the Share Feature on Steam so I can play my whole Main Steam Account Library on the Dell Monitor.  However I just can't give up surround I love it to much for L4D2.  I'm a Workshopaholic L4D2 modder.  I have these 4 monitors stacked at my desk see my picture.

I have an LG 34UC97 with a Titan X, and I can only maintain about 50 FPS in GTAV with my desired settings (2X MSAA).

I decided to upgrade to SLI'd 980Tis (or I suppose just standard 980s would have worked...), but the single 980Ti or Titan X wouldn't cut it.

Most titles it's fine. But games like GTAV, Witcher 3, and ProjectCARS come to mind of the games that I can't get a fluid 60 FPS in...at least not at my desired settings.

Why are you using AA at that pixel density? Thought that was one of the major selling points of 1440p. Seems like FXAA would be plenty.

Thanks, that's really helpful to see them side by side like that. I'm a fan of L4D2 too, but like most games it does tend to "fisheye" out at the extreme edges. I won't be selling my Benq (do we have the same monitors? xl2420t) until I've tested the 21:9 setup. I didn't realize how much taller the display is than 1080p.

I think I'm still sold on the 21:9 concept though. I catch myself looking only at the center monitor a lot and I think I can get peripheral vision from the 21:9 if I just move closer to it. I'm sitting a good 3-4 feet out from my surround setup.

Nah... I tried turning it off (talking about GTAV specifically), and the jaggies were very evident. No way I could run without at least 2X, but I'm sure 4X and 8X are debateably unnecessary. Maybe you're right at 4K pixel density, but not 1440p.

Have you tried forcing MFAA through the driver? It's suppose to be like 4x MSAA with the frame cost of 2x. I haven't myself, but if you've got the Titan, it's worth a shot.

My Benq's are XL2420Z they are 13 1/4" Bezel to Bezel i'm about 2 1/2 feet from them.  Dell is 14 3/4 Bezel to Bezel tall I'm about 3ft from it.  1440P is not that much taller and I have it tilted down.  I really feel comfortable with either of them right now.

Ps. If you play L4D2 odds are you bound to use some of my Mods I hit 500 last week.

So, apparently the free sync version is hitting some of the reviewers.  It was reported to come out after the GSYNC version originally by Acer.  It is listed at 75Hz.  Will the GSYNC version get to 100Hz?  Is that why it is delayed?

Freesync version will hit in a couple of weeks as per a couple of sites now and at $1099.  Reviewers have already started testing them.  That means that GSYNC will be around $1299 (if not a little more).  Wonder if it will still be September for the GSYNC version?
