Is it possible to revert to previous build? I'd like to play a bit more with 10.

If you have a restore point you should have no problems.  Otherwise I would think MS is going to issue a patch (unscrew up what we screwed up) soon.

Check your device manager. For the soundblaster/audio problem look under sound video and game controllers. If NVIDIA HD audio is there manually replace it with the Microsoft generic driver. You can also remove both instances of the NVIDIA HD audio but it's possible Windows might try and reinstall the driver.

In addition if what I suggested doesn't work try installing the soundblaster software and drivers again.

Done all that... so has everyone else experiencing this problem.  No fix for it.  Only a rollback.  Besides, I even reverted to using onboard audio and taking out the Blaster... no help.

You can now customize your start experience

I have to cringe a bit when the Start button is referred to as an "experience".

Oh... another problem.  Seems they forget to put codecs into this build.  No wav, wma, wmv, mp format will play. At least not locally from the harddrive.

The experience is at best a D ticket ride so far.

Anything unusual in the Device Manager? In the control panel/hardware and sound/Manage Audio Devices (under SOUND) are the correct audio playback devices selected?

Nope... Standard stuff, no NVidia stuff, just a SoundBlaster and HD Pro Webcam C920 (Logitech).  High Def audio devices are disabled.  When you play a video or any music (no matter the format) an error message comes up that basically says, this file format is not supported.

That seems to be the crux of the problem.  The drivers work, they recognize the device but with no codecs, you get nothing, no audio and no MP or WMV files.  (I don't use Quicktime so can't verify that.)

*** Edit.   I should mention that I'm a Sys Admin and been doing this since we had jumpers on I/O cards.  ;)

If you're using a soundblaster, grab the Win10 driver pack from Daniel_K's site. They work for me on an X-Fi Gamer card. If your onboard is Realtek, then try installing the latest drivers from their site. For some reason, the drivers that are included in Win10 are screwy. They'll load normally, won't show any errors in Device Manager, but you don't get any sound.

No joy here... the driver package recommended by Erin doesn't recognize a SoundBlaster Z so it aborts installation.  Oh well...

Yeah, according to this KB article, the Soundblaster Z should be supported officially by the time that Win10 releases. This pack is only for the X-Fi series cards.
