I've noticed if I let the default Auto fan control do its thing the card can reach up to 95C when playing games yet the fan RPM wont go any higher than 90% speed, is this normal?
If I load EVGA Precision and manually set the fan RPM to 100% the temp settles at 87C max when testing the same games.

Thanks.

Not normal at all. Sounds like your GPU needs the thermal paste reapplied.

I have some Arctic MX-4 would that be ok? I've only used it on CPU's in the past with good results.
Forgot to mention I removed the card and fan shroud, cleaned it all out, but temps remained the same so maybe It does need new thermal paste.

Yep, that will do just fine.

Looks like replacing paste dropped Idle temps by 5C and load temps 3C, Still seeing 92C under load with the auto fan control but I guess this is common w/ 480's on stock cooling? (according to my Google searches).

Is it normal that the stock paste wasn't fully covering the GPU surface? A portion on the left side of the GPU was untouched, but I guess not a huge deal since stability has never been an issue.

I was trying to find what's the best method for applying new paste but man that was a trap, so many mixed results / comments so I just went with the spread method using an old credit card.

Here's what the stock paste looked like:

EDIT: After applying new grease I wanted to get the heatsink installed ASAP to reduce possible contaminants and forgot to snap a pic.

Yep, according to google it does look like 95C is normal for this card on stock cooling using the default fan profile.

I just replaced my 480 in my work computer a few weeks back. 90-95c is pretty normal given the case I was using doesn't offer the most optimal air flow. Having read reviews when the 480 had first launched. Most reviewers stated this card ran super loud & hot. If the temps & noise bug you, you may look into an aftermarket cooler such as this:

I had contemplated buying one, however I never got around to it. From what I've heard, it really helps drop the temps on the 480, allowing for way more overclocking room.

A friend recently upgraded and gave me his EVGA 670 FTW which was just awesome, I'm loving this card lol, Runs much cooler, quieter and great performance @ 1080P

Depending where the 480 ends up I may still buy an aftermarket cooler before it goes, Thanks for the info.
