I've got a 4970K and a 980SC with an EK block and back plate. The 980 I leave alone, the 4970K runs stock "turbo" 4.4ghz
I've got a single 420 radiator in the loop and a D5 vario pump and the ambient temps are 27C average in my house. When gaming for a while my cpu runs at 45C and the gpu at 43C. Would adding another rad like a 240 or 360 help lower those temps?

I got the 980 with the EK block already mounted and am not happy with those temps for it and am thinking of taking it off and reapplying thermal paste.

Those are good temps, actually, excellent temps. Your CPU is a little under expected temps. The GPU is going to be a little warmer due to VRM cooling on that block, but it's definitely within expected ranges.

Thanks for the reply, good to know. I was curious because the gpu I had previously was 780HC and that never got above 40c this time of the year and couldn't remember if the cpu temp was similar or higher than previously.

That's because the GTX 780 HC had more power phases, to be fair, you would need to compare a GTX 980 classified or kingpin under water to that card. Your GTX 980 SC is going to run a little warmer.

Okay, so would it lower temps to add another radiator or would I be wasting my time?

Of course it would lower temps. Probably not as much as you'd like for the amount of money/time it would take to do it though. Those temps are great man, I'd just leave it be.

Well, I didn't leave well enough alone but that's okay since I added a 240mm radiator this weekend and the temps are now running, during a couple of hours playing BF4, 42C for the CPU and 37C for the gpu. The radiator was only $45.00 and I had extra tubing here so I'm very happy with the addition. To me it was worth it adding the other radiator into the loop. Anyway, just wanted to update this thread.

Temps are pretty good, and I agree, there is always room for another radiator....

    I know, and now I wonder why I didn't add a 360 instead of the 240. Just kidding...almost!

Nice outcome, guess seeing things under that 30C threshold sounds more satisfying than I thought. Now... pics?

I've got one piece of tubing I'm not happy with that I plan on getting fixed this weekend. After I get that situated, I'll upload some updated pictures.

I should have cleaned up the wiring in the back of the case to make it more tidy, but I did get the tubing fixed. The bottom horizontal one was giving me fits trying to get a 90 degree bend in such a short space that didn't look awkward so I just used an extension fitting and called it a day. Anyway, here's the updated pics!

Nice! looks clean. You going to mess with some overclocking a bit or just leave it all stock?

Thanks! I've played with the OC and can get this cpu to 5.0GhZ stable and the 980 to 1505mhz stable for benching and 1490mhz stable for gaming. But to answer your question, no I just leave them be while I do work at home and game. I'm very happy with how this runs the games I like and all my applications at home. It's nice to know I can run those speeds, but for a daily setting I'll just go with the stock speed stepping for the cpu and the 980SC's boost.

Thanks! I took the time to tidy up the cables yesterday so they're not showing on the right side of case now, and the back cables are all organized now too. I also moved the cable from the top led strip between the drive cage and the radiator so that red sleeving isn't hanging out there any longer. Anyway, I'm glad you like it!

WOW, nice attention to small details there.  Reading this is one of the reasons I dont post pics of mine.  I get the cables out of the way enough I can 1) get my hand in there without accidentally unplugging things, and 2) not impede airflow.         Once I get those 2 points met, im done.  I am all function over form for myself, but I can definitely appreciate the form side of it, but I just never do it for myself.  Who knows, maybe one day I will make mine look good.

lol, I know what you mean. I used to be the same way, but when I get focused on a project like this I get really focused on attention to detail as well as function.

It drives my wife nuts because I'm not like that all the time and she'll be like "when are you going to pick up those socks?" and then I"ll say "what socks?" and she'll say something like "the ones you left in the hallway a week ago."
