My First time Posting so please be gentle...

I have decided to upgrade my PC from my current GTX660 to a newer GTX 970. I feel like the timing is right with the Witcher+Batman promo, all this talk of Maxwell v Kepler with hairworks and such, as well the prices are coming more into the range I am willing to spend. (~$350~)
------------
I have narrowed it down to two possibilities:

1. From Tigerdirect EVGA 04G-P4-2978-KR GeForce GTX 970 FTW ACX 2.0
Cost: $349.99-$25 Instant Savings with Free (4-9 Day) Shipping and No Tax-$20 Rebate-$10 Anniversary=$314.99

2. From NewEgg EVGA 04G-P4-3975-KR GeForce GTX 970 SSC ACX 2.0+
Cost: $349.99-$21.00 Promo+ I have the ability to use Will Call to pick card up+23.03 tax-$15 rebate=$337.02
---------------
From my research using compare tools:
#1 has a faster Core and Boost Clock
#1 is listed as x16 while #2 isn't listed as such.
Some other differences are probably from the listing on the store page.
#1 Does not have tax
#2 Comes highly recommended
#2 I have the ability to get the card that day
#1 is less expensive by $22.03
#2 can apparently be overclocked more/better
----------------
Unless I am missing/overlooking anything #1 is the clear winner...am I missing/overlooking anything?
Will I have buyers remorse if I purchase the less expensive (and apparently better) card? I am willing to spend the extra $20, but only if I am absolutely sure.

You said #1 was x16 and #2 wasn't, that's wrong because they both are x16. Also, you forgot to mention that the 2978 model is the FTW model and also ACX 2.0 too. The FTW model is obviously better in any series. So, #1 would be better with performance and is also cheaper.

I meant to infer that it isn't listed as 16x, I was pretty sure it was.

Yes the 2978 is the FTW ACX 2.0 but the 3975 is the SSC ACX 2.0+

So FTW>SSC?

If I am understanding it properly, SC<SSC<FTW? So FTW would be the better/best series?

I think the 970's go FTW+>FTW>SSC>SC>normal. So there is a FTW+ which would be better but it may be a lot more expensive.

Makes sense. Thanks again for the help and insight.

A few users on reddit are convinced that the 3975 is the superior card could it be because I didn't include that it was the FTW edition?

You forgot to mention that it was a FTW and ACX 2.0 model which makes it looks like a reference crappy card. I was gonna say the SSC until I looked at what the 2978 model was too. I could be wrong and there may be a reason outside of performance that I'm not aware about, but I doubt it as the FTW edition is made with a higher performance chip and some slightly better components.

Re: Need some help deciding between two GTX970s. 2015/05/27 21:53:00 (permalink)
From Reddit user :

"#2 is the way to go. Acx 2.0+ fixes alot of problems that the Acx 2.0 has. If I'm not mistaken, #1 has only a slightly higher clock(25mhz?) Which doeant really make a difference when you are going to overclock. Especially since #2 runs cooler and has a new higher power phase and target." "25 mhz isnt anything. you can add that in precision x and not have to change memory or voltage. also. 2.0+ is still fairly new. it only came out a couple months ago cause people had such a problem with 2.0." "Thats not all 2.0+ jas to offer. On top of the new power phase and target, they got a new custom pcb. Added a mosfet cooling plate, straight fully copper heat pipes (that's a big one), new fan bearings, dual bios switch. I stepped up from the old ftw to the newer ftw+, and i could tell the difference right away when i was oc."

I was hoping to get some cohesion from the two forums to make the decision easier. I have updated my reddit post to reflect the proper name of the card.

I wouldn't expect to overclock the card at all with the 970 models. It also doesn't make a lot of to compair the FTW+ and the FTW as its my understanding that the FTW+ gets the better chips which would allow for a better OC. So I wouldn't really accredit that to the ACX 2.0+. I'm not saying that it's not better, but I would like to see a more equal comparison than that.

Well I again thanks for the input.

I am going to order the card on Friday so I will see what other input I can get but I think that the FTW card is going to be one to get it.

I'm not sure if it's a flaw or what not, but on EVGA's product pages, the ACX 2.0 and ACX 2.0+ are described exactly the same and they don't really say that one is better than the other anywhere. I think that there may be a diffrience but I find it hard to believe that it would effect you that much.

That is very helpful...I was looking for benchmarks and was having a hard time finding them.

Looks like the FTW is just ever so slightly better then the SSC

While it's true the ftw you're looking at is ever so slightly faster when you compare the two it's really pointless since you'll never really tell the difference. What's been mentioned and what I consider most important is that the SSC you model you're looking at is newer redesigned version. You have to keep in mind the ftw and SSC are basically the same card with the only difference being the clock speed. It should also be noted that the older model is known to have throttling issues while the newer models don't. Your purchase priority should be ftw+ then SSC+, before any other versions.

I have seen many disapointments with the FTW compared to the amount of SSC versions purchased. So... The FTW maybe faster, but more people have complained about it than those with the SSC edition.
This does not include the comparisons between "SC" and FTW. Only SSC and FTW.
Of course though, you may never have this issue with FTW. Probably it's just luck of the draw. that's why they have RMA available. But the hassle is another story. Make a good choice

Re: Need some help deciding between two GTX970s. 2015/05/28 06:33:20 (permalink)
I figured 25Mhz difference would be negligible and, as AlphonseMephestoMD on reddit points out, I can always use precision X to cover the difference.

So FTW+>SSC+>FTW>SSC>SC>normal>AMD/Radeon(kidding)

And isn't "luck of the draw" just a fact of life? lol

I might go ahead and drop the extra $20 on the SSC 2.0+ if there is a real difference. Plus I can pick it up on my way home from work on Friday and game all weekend.

"Make a good choice" That's I already decided EVGA, just needed help with which one.

The acx 2 - people saw a flaw in the acx cooler having 3 heat pipes and only 2 of them Touching the gpu.

Acx2+ doesn't have this. It was refreshed and out on the newer gpus.

I have an older one with the acx2 cooler and I have had no problems what so ever. Never throttles at all.

Hmm... that price difference is tempting to just go with the FTW...but perhaps I will get the SSC+ for now and keep an eye out for the FTW+ and perhaps use the step up program to my advantage.

That's a nice discount on an open box! I got mine at MC a couple of weeks ago. Normally I do not buy open box as you never know how it was handled (or used/abused in overclocking) and possibly missing some accessories. But I'd have seriously had to rethink a savings of $50. That's what I call a score. Oh and if you have an average D/L bandwidth speed, be prepared to spend a few hours downloading the ~22GB for W3 through GOG. They break it up in 7 different download files (1 being a pre-game patch).  Batman is through Steam and you'll see it in your Games Library but you can't D/L it until it's released on 6/23.

My current GTX660 was an Open Box deal from them a while ago and didn't run into any troubles. (Knock on wood)

I usually inspect everything either in-store or in my car, if there are any problems #1 MC has 15 Day returns and #2 EVGA has 3-year warranty so I am not concerned.

I am also not worried about the rebate since EVGA was the first one I got back last time.

The GTX 970 SSC, 3975 is the better choice between the two. The FTW model is an older version. The SSC (3975) and FTW+ are the revision cards that added straight pipe cooling, increasing the effectiveness of the air cooler and also they added a 8 pin power connector instead of a 6 pin so it could handle the boost clocks a lot better. I'd stay far away from the FTW model.

I picked up the SSC ACX 2.0+ just a little while ago.

Thanks for the input!
