Say what? Guess I have been out of the loop. My new pc came with a 256gb Samsung ssd. My other pc had a Intel 320 160gb ssd in it. I had never heard or seen about this OP until I installed Samsung Magician software. It suggest to set 10% to the side. Which would be 23gb. I never done something like this with my last ssd. I also made sure to never come close to filling it up either. Samsung seems to highly suggest it. Doing some google. Others say its a complete waste of time. Who knows what the deal is. Very confusing?

Every mfg and most every SSD "expert" on this board have recommended over provisioning.  The SSD firmware uses it to make TRIM and Garbage collection / data relocation faster and more efficient.  This also, IMO, helps on reducing the ware on the NAND bits / chips

Even if I never come close to filling the drive up? I just use it for my OS and programs. Everything else goes on the hdd including games. Currently I have 216GB available out of 237GB.

It is better that the SSD Firmware manage were and how the TRIM and Garbage function works on the SSD. That is why mfg's design the Firmware to use over provisioning location as temporary relocation area.  The OS never knows where the data is, just that it request TRIM or just lets the Garbage function do its thing.

Well I went ahead and done it. The program suggested 10% and took away 23gb. Hope I am not to late and did not screw things up. I have been using this new ssd for about 2 weeks now.

You will be fine.  In 2 weeks there has not been enough data relocation to matter.

It can make a big difference in performance if you move large files too quickly and TRIM/garbage collection space gets filled up faster than it can be cleared. If that happened, not only would performance plummet but drive life can be drastically reduced due to heavy swapping in the TRIM/garbage collection space. Make more over provisioning space to increase performance and spread out the writes to reduce write cycles.

You are to leave 25% of space minimum on all SSD's for TRIM to function correctly. 10% is not enough for TRIM to function.

All NAND drives (even USB memory sticks) come over provisioned from the factory. The factory over provisioning is not visible to you and is space you can never manually unlock. That factory over provisioning space is set in the drive's firmware or storage controller. That factory over provisioning quantity will vary from product to product, but I don't think you need to manually add another 25% over provisioning on top of the already existing 5% to 10% or whatever amount of factory over provisioing. That begins to seem a bit excessive.

How many giant files (gigabytes and gigabytes) are you creating and deleting every day? You shouldn't be turning over 25% of your drive's bits in the amount of time it takes for TRIM to catch up.

I still use ssd, mainly for the OS, fast hdd for almost everything else, besides a few slow/large loading games/apps(mostly reads)...

^ Don't feel bad. As I mentioned earlier. This is my first Samsung ssd and my second ssd I have ever owned. Never heard of it until I installed their software. My last ssd in my old pc was a Intel 320 160gb ssd. Even in their software nothing is mentioned about it or have a option.
