Im looking to upgrade my rig over the next few weeks.

Currently on the list is:
MOBO - ASUS X99-A
CPU - i7-5820K
RAM - 16GB 2666 DDR4
GPU -  GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0 (Or ti depending what we hear on Tuesday)

But I'm thinking, is it really worth going for DDR4 now?
Id like it to hold out as a solid enough build for at least 3 years before thinking about upgrades again, sticking with DDR3 would mean getting a whole new MOBO and CPU by the next upgrade, whereas with a DDR4 board there is some room for future upgrades.

What do you guys think?

I think it is a fine upgrade. My DDR4 has played very well. DDR4 will definitely be around and only get better with time.

Reading over PC Gamers high end build review, they mention it briefly, but say that there is very little gain in "single or duel GPU systems" which this is.

Yeah... But in the future, when the timings are tighter and ddr4 is exceeding the current ddr3, ddr3 will be sitting exactly where it is now.

That, and memory controllers will continue to get better as well.

One thing I can NEVER understand is why someone asks for an opinion and when it is given, immediately throw "well I read this article" out there. Well, why ask, obviously you read the article so you didn't need to ask for an opinion, lol.

I am not going to acknowledge these kind of posts for that reason in the future.

Im mentioning that article because its another opinion im taking into consideration.
Im reading replies, but Im also researching. And since I found an opinion that apposes your view, I'm curious what your thoughts/arguments would be about that apposing opinion.

I have had issues overclocking my ddr3 past specifications, after much time invested into it and attempting, over the last couple of years. Ddr4, set it, forget it, watch it fly. That is just the beginning.

It is future prepared, since all systems are making the move to DDR3/4 mix and DDR4 dedicated systems.

If your looking at the future, why would you stay in the past? You aren't looking specifically at perf9rmance only, or are considering possible upgrades in the future. In 3 years, if you are still happy with the 5820k, but want faster ram, you can simply buy it. If you stick with ddr3, you know it works, but there won't be upgrades as everyone is focused on DDR4.

Thank you, I am convinced, still a little concerned that adopting so early could mean some issues down the road, but its better than getting a setup that's outdated the day its new.

I would choose a similar upgrade path. The only reason I haven't yet is lack of funds.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X,  Corsair Mp700 Pro M.2, 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5  X670E Steel Legend, MSI RTX 4090 Associate Code: H5U80QBH6BH0AXF. I am NOT an employee of EVGA

I went with the x99 5930k and a cheap 16gb ddr4 kit, knowing the ram is garbage on purpose. The reasoning was that ddr4 will get cheaper and faster, and it already has in the time since i built this pc. Im still waiting for ddr4 that is around 4 ghz and decently priced. It is pretty close so far.

    Asus Strix Z790 F - Intel 13700 K - Gigabyte 4090 Windforce - 32gb DDR 5 - 1TB Samsung SSD 850 evo - Windows 10 Pro - 1TB Samsung M.2 860 - Inland 2 TB NVMe - Acer Predator X27
