Ok, so last time I checked into this it was not possible. But that was back when the SR2 was king and I was folding BIGADV units. So I'm building a second machine with a couple 780Ti's in it. I don't have any extra windows key's laying around so I figured I'd check into this as an alternative. So is it possible to fold GPU's in linux now? And if so, what version is the best to use? Anyone here ever done it? And if so what are your thoughts? Or should I just dig up the last $100 to buy a copy of Windows 7 or 8 whichever I can find? Let me know your thoughts.

Thank you I appreciate it.

Their official page indicates that it's a go - https://folding.stanford.edu/home/guide/linux-install-guide/

It can be done from what I remember. I haven't done much folding in awhile, since BIGADV went out. But just a few days ago I downloaded the v7 FatH client and it setup the Nvidia card I had in the rig, but I didn't test it to see if it would fold. But I'm pretty sure I did some GPU folding in Linux Mint with Nvidia cards when I was still a big time folder. You'll have to get and setup the Nvidia driver package "abit harder than setup in a windows rig" there are many helpful Linux tut out there on the web, its how I learned how. Its time I use my EVGA bucks so I fire up my 4P and a few W7 GPU's to make the 2 tiers for the few extra bucks I need to complete the task of getting that new video card. If it come back to me on the how to I'll be sure to post that info for ya. I'm going to head out to the shop now and give it a test go on that old Nvidia card "probably to slow to do any good" but may work for this test to see.

Yes it does fold in Linux Mint 14 with a GTX480, with the EVGA GT240 it got the error couldn't get assignment so I removed it and placed in the 480. I think there is still no overclocking in Linux or wasn't last time I looked, but you can install NVIDIA X Server package to control the fan speed to help keep them cool. Good luck with your new setup.

Edit: BTW the GTX480 picked up P9201, 8000 base credits @ 43k PPD
Its the only one I'll fold  will set to finish since the card is at 83c with fan speed manually set @ 100% ouch!
    Core x17

Edit2: I have a pretty old driver installed 304.88 so there could be some room for improvement with a newer driver release.

On my last rig, I started to mess with Linux,
but after about a week of messing around trying to get the nVidia drivers installed and after much help, I gave up. That was about 6 months ago.

I bought Win7 Pro and started folding straight away.

I only tried Linux because of the core 15 WU running around. But it seems I have not had a core 15 for such a long time now, did they run out??

Good luck either OS you choose.

Back around the time I pretty much dropped folding I saw a few new Linux releases that already had the NVIDIA driver packages. I think Mint was one of those new releases with it. So search around folding maybe much easier to get going now.

Well This is interesting. The SteamOS is  Linux base and uses a hole lot of graphics. And comes well equipped with a desktop if some one want to help me I would be willing to try for fun but let me say I know nothing of folding except it uses gpus and SteamOS uses GPUsbetter then any Linux I ever seen.
I have several steam machines I made for fun.
Im willing to try If someone helps me with info.
then I can share the Findings.
    I have a SLI version w/ 2 560s
I will Have Time Later in the week and next week.

To the question above yes you can use any card in SteamOS and its free and Linux

Wow, didn't expect this many responses lol. Thanks for the info guys. If I had dug a little deeper I probably would have seen that it was a go. I'll give it a go and see what happens I suppose. Guess it's time to put my Linux pants back on lol.

There will be no more new projects using Core 15 WUs but it could be up to 2 years before there will be no more Core 15 WUs available.

    Thanks.
