I recently upgraded from a EVGA GTX 680 FTW Edition to the EVGA GTX 980 FTW Edition, prior to the upgrade I had a black screen once in a blue moon but since the upgrade when I'm in game (Skyrim, CoD Avdanced Warfare, GW2) I periodically get a black screen and hear buzzing popping sounds ( I think the audio buzz I hear when it black screens is the game audio hanging) and then my pc resets but unless I power off my pc I have no video on either monitor. I've done stress testing, benchmarking and I've tried overclocking and underclocking along with stock settings with no issues UNLESS I'm in game. I've also checked my voltage from my PSU and as far as I can tell the 12V rail isn't abnormal in any way so I don't think that's the issue. I've tried reinstalling video drivers as well with no luck. I'm hoping someone has some information regarding this issue as I've seen others having similar problems with the 900 series GPU's but I've yet to read anything really helpful.

Send message to technical support probably is card unstable on fabric clock and start to think easy on other model, Classified, reference SC, or Hybrid maybe... Best if you can test card little more until they answer you...
If you still have GTX680 FTW back card again, but I think if problems starts when you replace card 99% is new card unstable.

Signis, You will find a lot of posts with helpful information.

    1) prior to the upgrade I had a black screen once in a blue moon (Computer is unstable)
    2) (I think the audio buzz I hear when it black screens is the game audio hanging) Audio Driver Conflicts

    The rest are unknown Factors;
Motherboard or Pre Configured Computer like a Dell or an HP.
    Motherboard Bios not current.
Motherboard Bios Not set back to Default or Optimized setting before new card was installed
Power Supply is old or poor grade and maybe low wattage.
Took old card out and install new card without removing the Older NVIDIA Drivers to include NVIDIA HD Audio Drivers.
The CPU and or Memory is Overclocked and in an unstable state.

There are way to many Unknown Factors to blame that it is a bad video card out of the box.

Sorry should have included more information in my initial post.
    specs are as follows:
CPU - Intel i5-3570k stock clock
MoBO - Asus Sabertooth Z77 with latest bios set to high performance
Memory - Corsair Dominator Platinum 1866mhz 16gb stock clock ( I'm currently in the process of testing my memory, initial results show that both dimms have errors, however I've yet to determine if it's the dimms or the ram slot that I tested them in)
Power Supply - Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 800w modular 80 plus gold
Sound card - Asus Xonar Essence STX with Win 8.1 driver (I don't have any other audio driver installed, buzzing sound only occurs when pc black screens and only for 2-3 seconds)
Capture Card - AverMedia Live Gamer HD C985 with Win 8.1 driver and latest firmware
Storage - Intel 330 Series Maple Crest 60gb SSD (I have Windows 8.1 installed on this drive)

When I installed my new GPU the only thing I did was delete and install the latest drivers, I should also mention that I also recently did a clean install of Win 8.1 pro. Previously I was running Win 7 and I've had the same issues with both OS's.
I no longer have my old GTX 680 FTW unfortunately, I do however have my old AMD Saphire HD 4850 I could try.

I would remove all the drivers for the Graphics Card
Now remove the Drivers for the Sound card - Asus Xonar Essence STX & Capture Card - AverMedia Live Gamer HD C985 Drivers and remove them from your computer.
Next install ONLY NVIDIA Graphics and PhysX Drivers.
Next Install your Asus Xonar Essence STX and current Drivers *This Card is known to only have Beta Drivers from a year ago.
Asus Xonar Essence STX is also Known to cause issues with Maxell GPUs
Next Install your Capture Card - AverMedia Live Gamer HD C985 Card, Make sure you have the current Drivers.
    Now come the Testing.

Keep this "old AMD Saphire HD 4850" away far away very far away from your computer.

I know any minute now all the ASUS users will start screaming and running amuck at what I said.
Please, Pretty Please allow us the respect of troubleshooting the issue here and not start running amuck.

First everything on default, Sound Card Xonar out of PC.
CPU/Memory default, 3.5GHz/1333MHz... all night Memtest86 version 6.0 from DOS with bootable USB Flash...
To be honest that should be done before you OC Processor and memory when you build PC... once on
1333MHz DDR3 or 2133 for DDR4 and second time after set kit specification.  Best time is over night to leave.

    http://www.memtest86.com/download.htm
    http://www.memtest86.com/technical.htm#win

You need 2 good DIMMS to everything work normal and for testing graphic card later.
If someone don't know new MemTest86 is now available with support for DDR4 memory and include support for older V4.x BIOS

Ok so I've tried clean driver installs but as far as I can tell my issue isn't because something is breaking. It looks like my card just isn't up to snuff, it's not stable at stock clock speeds. I've underclocked it and so far so good, i'm not very happy about this though as I wasn't planning on buying a sub par card.

That's fastest way to confirm instability of card. But you should keep at least 1-2 days on lower clock and if card is still stable than back on fabric clock. If problem back you don't need nothing to test any more.

Yeah I removed them, totally gone from my pc, then I rebooted and installed nvidia graphics and physx driver -reboot- asus audio driver -reboot- and finally the capture card driver.

    Hi Signis,

I'm having exactly the same fault as you're describing with an EVGA GTX 980 FTW Edition also only whilst in a game and seemingly completely random.

Have run stress tests for hours, downclocked, updated BIOS (as advised by tech support) and benchmarked through various means, can't get it to happen at all but occurs whilst playing various games sometimes 5 mins in and at other times after several hours.

I've been advised to RMA the card to resolve and will be sending it off within the next few days, you may have the same issue :)

Just a note:  I am on my soon to be 3rd 980 FTW.  I believe the card is a dud, at least in my eye.  If this one exhibits the same issue, I am requesting a refund or the SC 980.  EVGA did not allow me to change cards as I requested, but if this one is bad, I will be more demanding and if no movement, I will get my CC Co. involved.  I think they will make it right though.

Btw, I am running -100mhz in order to play my games until the new card arrives next week.  It's been running smoothly underclocked since Monday (5/11).  When I saw FTW, I knew the end result.  When someone has this issue, I suggest underclocking to see if the card is a dud; they can do all that other stuff if they want (waste of time in my opinion), this is the simplest, less time consuming method to get your answer about the card quickly; it only takes a few seconds to change and few minutes to confirm.  Good luck, but you will be RMA'g it.  Welcome to the FTW club.

One good thing is at least it's an EVGA card because CS is grade A.

Just upgraded from an EVGA GTX770 SC to the EVGA GTX980 FTW and couldnt be happier... went smooth as silk and performance is awesome so Im sorry to hear about your issues...

Helped a friend upgrade their video card last month, they went from the EVGA GTX760 ti to the EVGA GTX980 FTW and we had a small issue with the driver and power settings that we fixed by setting them to "High performance" as outlined below from another thread linked below... not sure if this will help you out or not but I've installed two of these cards now in two separate systems in the last two months with only a small adjustment to power settings...

NOTE: Both systems had 1000 watt or better PSU and CPU core parking disabled.

    This is the fix.

Select High performance in power settings go to change advanced settings... pcie power saving off... and cpu minum set to 5 or 10 will disable core parking. In the nvidia ctrl pnl on global setting use single display and adaptive. then add each game or benchmark you are using in program settings and set them all to prefer maximum performance. This is what got rid of the TDR errors and any low gpu usage for me.

I wish it were that easy and that was all I needed to get the card to run at stock speed.  EVGA my 1st RMA'd card and it failed.  I wish you all the luck with the card.  Hope you don't have to go through 2 cards (so far) like myself.

Okay guys, I rma'd my FTW and just got my replacement today, for about an hour it was beautiful...then it black screened just like my first card. Don't suppose you had any luck with your rma Daemonic?
During the RMA process I installed my old hd 4850 with absolutely no issues, no black screens, no ctd's , no bsods and no freezing. I can't imagine my mobo or psu is the issue considering my old video card didn't have any issues whatsoever, not to mention that I never had any issues until the day I upgraded to a 980 ftw.

    Same problem here forums.evga.com/FindPost/2338127
I really hope this can be fixed with a BIOS update.
