Hello everyone. Today I got my new GPU, a EVGA GTX 980, and I've tried playing Diablo 3 and Guild Wars 2, both with high settings, and after like 30 seconds, my screen either shuts down or shows a Yellow-ish color. When restarting, it tells me there have been power surges detected and that the computer shut down to avoid any damage.

Here are my specifications :
-8GB of RAM
-Intel(R) Core (TM) i5-2310 CPU @ 2.90 GHz
-EVGA GTX 980.
-My PSU info is the following : Voltage - 115V/230V , Current - 7A/4A , Frequency - 50Hz/6. (Thats a 600W PSU).
OS : Windws 7 64bit.

I also downloaded EVGA precision 16, which apparently lets me change the "power target" (it's at 100% right now).
How can I fix this? Is my PSU the problem? Would it be a good idea to take the "power target" slider below 100% and see if that helps? Any other ideas?. So far I haven't done anything to solve the problem since I don't wanna break anything lol.

From what I've been reading, apparently Asus motherboards are really sensitive to these power surges. I can disable this feature in the BIOS but I'm not sure if that's safe, although according to some admin in ASUS forums it is.

Anyone else had this problem before?.

Thanks!

I had that power surge happen once on my Asus P8z77-I and Titan X while playing XCOM of all games. I ended up plugging the power cord into the PSU really well (not disabling anything in the BIOS) and haven't had it happen since. This was with a Silverstone 700W.

What is the model of that power supply btw as well as 12V rails/amperage?

Sentey PSU model BCP600-OS is the PSU, I live in Venezuela so it might be a random one made here or something.

About the 12Vrails/amperage I'll write what appears in the PSU (cause I dont understand it lol).
DC Output : -12V -5V +5V +12V +3.3V +5VSB COM
FULL LOAD : 0.5A 0.5A 16A 14A 13A 2A GND.

Whoa, am I reading this correctly?

Unless readings are much different over there, a single 12V with only 14A? If I'm reading this right, this is waaaay under powered for your card.

Edit: I can't seem to find it, but apart from being a brand I've never heard of, I'm sure the recommended amperage on the 12V rail for this card is well above that despite this being a 600W PSU. I'll keep looking though unless someone beats me to it.

Hm well, my PSU looks a little bit different, but it has the same values and 14A does appear below trhe +12V thingy...so yeah I guess :/. Figured since the PSU is 600W it would be enough since the card says minimum 500W PSU.

Is there anything I can do to make it work maybe while I get a new PSU or something?. Does playing in lower settings help at all? Or lowering the power target in EVGA Precision X or something?.

Honestly, the best advice anyone can give you on these forums with the money you spent on that hardware is to not gamble with your power supply since any type of irregular surge or in this case, underpowered feed can cause problems you don't want.

Alright, can you recommend any power supplies? I don't know much about this as you can see. (Pref some cheap ones).

You just bought a ~$500 video card. I'm sorry but I wouldn't feel right recommending anything too "cheap" but certain brands you should look towards are EVGA, Silverstone, Seasonic, or Corsair. The main thing is the check the Amp on the 12V listing and make sure it's at least 36-40+ (I still can't find the recommended amp on this card for the life of me).

Power supplies are also rated by the efficiency (bronze, silver, gold). As long as you follow the Amp advice and go with a known trusted brand like the ones mentioned, I'm sure you'll find a good one. If you're still unsure, just come back and ask

Hm so anything lower than that won't work?:/

Take a look at that one if you can please (ignore the fact that it's in spanish, the pics are in english). It shows 12V1 and 12V2 both with 25A...would that work?.

Alright, had to pull this off another site forum because I just can't find Amp requrements from official sites, but here you go:

Power Supply Requirements for a single GeForce GTX 980
• NVIDIA specifies a minimum of a 500 Watt or greater system power supply. (Minimum system power requirement based on a PC configured with an Intel Core i7 3.2GHz 130 Watt TDP processor.)
• the power supply must also have a maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 38 Amps or greater
• two 75 Watt 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors. There are some non-reference design cards that require one 75 Watt 6-pin and one 150 Watt 8-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors or two 150 Watt 8-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors.

In this case, the PSU you mentioned above would work with a combined 50A on the 12V also assuming it meets these other requirements and it's a proven brand.

Alright, well, thanks a lot for the help! :). I'll have to check other PSUs and decide which one to buy. This sucks D: lol
