I presently use 3 DIMMs of 2GB each. I have heard about many X58 boards having trouble with >=12GB and/or 6 DIMMs due to memory controller issues.

My options for upgrade:
a) Replace these DIMMs with 4GB modules (total of 12GB)
b) Add 4GB DIMMs to the existing ones (total of 18GB)
c) Don't upgrade and stay with 6GB

Has a) or b) been proven reliable with this motherboard?

Does >=12GB require using slower DIMMs and/or slower timings in the BIOS? (I am thinking of when I tried to upgrade a Socket 939 board above 2GB. Not a good experience.)

The 3 DIMMs I now use are Crucial Ballistix with LEDs. This model is no longer available. I don't have their original timings data any more.

The FTW3 manual says 24 GB is supported, but motherboard manufacturers do not always test the higher quantities before going to market. So upon hearing of a number of X58 users having trouble >=12 GB, I thought I should be cautious about attempting to go to 12 GB, let alone 18 GB.

Would software reveal the hardware timings or just what the BIOS is actually using (whether ideal or slower)?

I have 24GB of RAM in my X58 FTW Board, it is six sticks of Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer RAM at 1866mhz and timings of 9-9-9-24 and a 1T command rate. They run at a 1.5V in XMP mode on other boards but I'm running them at 1.6V as they gave me a BSOD with 1.5V.
