Got some new hardware coming, and some wonderful hardware becoming available -- dipping my toe back in the water since the last time I participated, looking forward to contributing some.

I'm back folding again... again... again! ( I'm in an on and off relationship with folding for some reason)

Let's just hope I can take the heat, 2 GTX 980 SC and a 4770k

Re:New EVGA Folder Check-IN 2015/05/06 12:15:41 (permalink)
Hi,
I used to independently fold back in 2008 but then stopped because of other real life issues. Now I am back and I just joined up to be on the EVGA folding team. I recently bought a new video card. A EVGA 04G-P4-3778-RX GeForce GTX 770 4GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Dual Classified with EVGA ACX Cooler Video Card Manufactured Recertified

I am not really a Gammer but I do 3D Graphics modeling software and when I registered my card I found the EVGA folding team and joined.

I have one question though. When I running on Medium when I am working I usually come to my computer to find that my Video card has overheated and blue screened my machine at least once every 24 hours. Is there a setting that I missed or do I just have a bad card.
When I run it on light when I am working, then only my CPU does any processing. My GPU just sits idle. Even if I am away from my machine for many hours.

My CPU is water cooled and the temp is fine. My Video Card seems to run about 67 to 70 degrees Centigrade.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Great  to have you here folding, I joined about 1 month ago.

67 to 70'c seems high for a watercooled gpu.  My aircooled 770 runs at 65'c all day long at 100%.
Anyone with a watercooled 770 able to check inwith their experience????

Which driver are you using??  Should be the 327.xx  as you will suffer lower points with the newer drivers.

Cheers

I meant to say that my "CPU" was water cooled and it folds just fine. My EVGA 770 "GPU" is dual fan air cooled and it is the one that is blue screening on me. I was using the video driver version 327.xxx until a few days ago. Because I was getting blue screens when folding I downloaded and installed the latest version of the Nvidia drivers and installed them.

Can you tell me more about the issue with using the latest video drivers for my card? I had been using driver version 327.xx because I had a password decryption program that needed the older driver. Are you saying that I also need the older driver for the best folding performance?

Thanks for any help. If I should be posting this somewhere else please accept my apologies and let me know where the proper thread is to post questions like mine.

770 you have the best driver for Folding on that GPU.
Maybe your CPU Overclocking is unstable.
What are your BSOD Codes, like 116 121 or 124 or even 117

Yes. You need the 327.xx driver.
For folding, your computer must be stable. Any issue with any component will show up as failed work units or bsd.
Check everything.

In your original post, you said that the 770 had overheated. What brought you to that conclusion??

No my "CPU" is not the one failing. It is the "GPU" on my video card that fails. I do not remember the exact error code but what the error  says is: Your hardware has failed. Please contact the manufacturer of your hardware about this error. I will give the exact error code the next time that this happens. I have been running all day with the medium setting and have not blue screened yet today.

My "CPU" temp is running about 114 degrees Fahrenheit and does not seem to be the issue. My "GPU is running at about 68 degrees Centigrade or 145 fahrenheit.

Look in this Folder for a .dmp C:\Windows\LiveKernelReports\WATCHDOG
you can use BlueScreenView.exe to read the files.
Are you overclocking your CPU or Memory on your Motherboard?
If so this can cause the GPU to fail.
For the most part we all user C Centigrade when talking about computer temperatures, myself in the US I have to convert Fahrenheit to see what they. Funny is not.

Anything in your Event Viewer?
I could also be a bad WU we do get them once in a while.
What was the Core and Project number that you were running when it crashed and also how old is this card?

I think that I may have found the problem. In the advanced settings I had the Folding Core priority set to "Slightly Higher" for some reason. The recommended setting is "Lowest Possible" I will watch and see if that makes any difference.

Thanks for the help and I will let everyone know if that fixes the problem.

As you are folding on cpu and gpu.
Do you have a cpu core free for the gpu folding??

Yes it was but I must also say that I just installed the new video card and started folding at the same time, so I am not sure which thing upset the apple cart. The new card or starting to fold, or both.

I believe so as it is a quad core i7 running at 3240ghz with hyper threading. I does not show all of the 8 cores active at any given time.

When folding a cpu wu, it should say cpu:7.
That means there is a free core for the gpu.

I uninstalled the drivers for the older ASUS Nvidia card but I installed the latest video drivers for this new video card. Version: 350.12. Should I downgrade back to the 327.XX drivers that I was using with my old card?

Cool. You are good to go there with cpu 6 or 7.
For best PPD use the 327.xx drivers.

I can not tell you which ones I use at the moment as I am in Australia at Ayres Rock. Home to Switzerland in about 9 days.

I went to Nvidia to find that driver but it is not offered for my card. I did find it but the specs only show the GTX 770m to use that 327.23 driver.

Are you sure that that 327.23 version will work on my new card and work better than the new driver 350.xx for folding? My old card is listedas being compatable with the 327.23 driver but my new card is not on the list.

Thanks for any help.

Re:New EVGA Folder Check-IN 2015/05/13 08:28:49 (permalink)
Welcome to our Team, James Poma.

The 327.23 driver will give you the best folding performance on your GTX770 for Core17 projects (newer drivers have a 50% lower folding performance).  However with Core18 projects there is not much difference when you use the newer drivers.
Core17 projects are phased out and Stanford is moving to the more improved Core18 and you'll probably get much more Core18 than Core17 projects (I'm getting ~90% Core18 WUs with my GTX780 Ti's and GTX660 Ti's).
So it's up to you if you want to use 327.23 drivers, which you can find here for your GTX770:  NVidia 327.23 WHQL driver - 64-bit

You also mentioned the "Slightly Higher" priority setting for the GPU, that option was usefull for older projects (Core15 and older), which didn't use much of the CPU and you could use all CPU cores for folding.  But that is changed with Core17 and Core18, now you need to have at least one CPU core free for every GPU.

Well I uninstalled the newer driver and installed the 327.23 version of the driver and I am still getting what appear to me to be video card crashes about once a day. I have a quad core i7 running at 3250mhz and the video card has stock settings and is not being over clocked.
