Amazing Review Steve!

I am excited to get my replacement so that I can setup the calibration. When I ran my tests the first round, I did it without any calibrating. :)

Totally agree with you that it should be flawless.  The Rog Swift had tons of issues, too.

I myself have been lucky. My sample shows almost zero bleed and no stuck pixels. Im hoping to calibrate it myself tonight using a spyder pro calibration tool. The Acer colors are definitely off to me but the whites are white and the blacks are black.
All games I've played are silky smooth but gta v, gta shows stuttering with sli enabled.

Hey

I would recommend the asus rog swift. I have had 0 issues, no dead/stuck pixels and backlight bleeding is yet to be found in my case. The g-sync module combined with 144hz, you'll never go back. Sincerely i now recommend g sync and 120hz+ to anybody who's looking for a "smoothness" upgrade. Once you play 1 second on a monitor that has both of these options, you'll call off at job ;)

We were referring to the early QC issues with backlight bleed, dead/stuck pixels, and interpolation and such.  Some came out perfect while others even had dirt and literal fingerprints under the panel film.  If you got a good one, you were lucky in the beginning.  Seems to be the same problem with this Acer.

I'm really interested to see if we have problems as early adopters in a year or so of things failing because we are running this screen at this frequency.  Some of the ROG Swift folks are just now having issues after having 'good' monitors.  Let's hope not.  Hopefully it is a very small percentage, and there will always be a percentage.

And it's only $699 right now with the discount code on the site through the 10th.  Pretty good.  I just wanted the IPS screen.  I'm the guy that pauses during a game and looks at the environment while my AI companions continue to get beat up.

If I wanted a 1440 IPS monitor with a Titan X I've done some more research and this would be my choice:

Was the only thing on my radar, actually.  I have a 21:9 now and love the format.  I also wanted to see what 144Hz is about, though, and that is only at 75Hz.  Once the XB270HU hit, I decided to pull the trigger.  That, and the fact that the XR will be $1299 at launch.  That is an extra $500 premium.  If I'm not totally excited by the XB, I will return it and wait for that XR.

EDIT:  That XR341CK is why I bought the Titan X, to be honest.

I knew about that monitor when I bought the XB270HU.

The XR341CKA is going to be a $1300 75hz IPS monitor that's curved at 3440x1440. I don't know if we are reaching the limits of current tech at that point, but I would want a higher refresh rate if possible for that price point. Also, i'm not sure how the curved screen is going to affect gaming.

It will be interesting to see the reviews of this monitor when it comes out. :D

@Shaman - I am in the same line of thinking, if I get another defective monitor, I will probably return it and wait for reviews on the curved monitor.

TITAN X is still best on 1440p resolution, not more than that.
With x2 or x4 MSAA and x16 Anisotropic.

I think the XR is the same panel as the Dell U3415W that is already out.  It has been well noted that it can run at 75Hz already.  Basically you are picking up G-sync with the Predator, though, and that would reflect to the current cost of producing that screen as the Dell is down to around $1K.  There is also some mention of Gen2 G-sync as it has an HDMI 2.0 port as well on the XR.

@vlada011 - I would agree with that statement on First Person shooters.

But seriously, check out a game like Diablo 3, or Starcraft 2 in 2160p and compare it to 1440p. The difference in detail is incredible. Those games run at a solid 60fps with all settings maxed on my PC and you can see a huge difference in how the game looks. Having a higher refresh did nothing for those games.

Dying light and Witcher 2 was a different story. The game is much smoother with the higher refresh rate and much more enjoyable.

Well, it's here.  Box was damaged but interior was fine.

I have a very small area in the upper right hand corner that appears to be dirt under the film about 1.25" diagonally from the corner.  It's not horrible but it is there.  Could be lazy pixels.  I will test that later.  No perceptible back light bleed.  Can't really comment for certain on IPS glow until I can play in a dark environment.  My system is in the loft so I have a lot of ambient light during the day.  I don't see it at all under these conditions.  Colors are pretty good.  I have a 10 bit panel now and I can tell the difference to an 8 bit, but I would adjust to that pretty easily.  Stand adjustment is fantastic.  I have played some Diablo III and SWTOR.  I plan on playing a few other games this evening when I have more time.  Titan has zero issues in either game holding at 144 FPS with everything maxed.

So far, though, I don't feel an amazing difference.  I don't perceive anything magical.  I don't think the Hz is life changing.  We will see if G-sync is a factor when I play something more demanding.  I definitely have to get used to the ratio coming from a 21:9.  I will load up some faster paced games tonight as well.  At the moment, I could return this and feel like I haven't really lost much, and that is depressing.

I have the ROG Swift and couldn't be happier. Coming from an IPS panel I think the TN display on the Swift is actually quite good. It doesn't have that same Vibrance as a IPS but the high refresh rate and G-Sync is a more than fair compromise. I can't wait for the Titan X to be delivered so I can really push higher frame rates on it.

Re: Titan X - What 1440p monitor would you recommend? 2015/05/06 19:12:06 (permalink)
So, as I'm reinstalling some games to try out, I realize I don't really have any first person shooters to speak of.  All of them are on my console.  All of my RTS, MMO, and primarily campaign type games are on my PC.  I have games I play with friends like Left for Dead 2 or Zombie Army Trilogy, but those don't require the accuracy of a COD or BF4.

I will say that the G-sync is a win.  On Dying Light the dips aren't noticeable at all anymore.  When I ran the Bioshock Infinite benchmarks I didn't really notice the drops, and they are HUGE at different transition points.

I'll keep using it for a couple days, but at this point I am thinking that I am more concerned about having G-sync and excellent color/detail and less about 144Hz.  This really is a pretty nice monitor, though.  We shall see.

Good gravy, what the heck would push 1440p @ 144Hz?

Got to play in darkened environment last night.  Light bleed from the right side of panel.  It isn't noticeable in a well lit environment, but I mostly play in the evenings.  That, coupled with the bad pixels, means it's going back to the Egg.

The 144Hz didn't do a lot for me either.  Now the Predator XR will be what I wait for and we will try that one, I guess.
