Hey everyone,

I am purchasing an r9 280x and there seems to be some very large discrepancies between the size of the PSU I should purchase depending on the card manufacturer.

The XFX card requires a 750w PSU

The Asus card requires up to 300Wadditional 6+8 pin PCIe power required (which a 750W psu should be able to handle)

The HIS card requires at least a 500 w PSU

Why is there such a huge discrepancy between the power required for the card? I am leaning towards the highest end XFX GPU btw.

I currently only have a 600w PSU and want help purchasing a PSU.

What is the minimum wattage for the new PSU I should buy? (PC Specs Below)

Gigabyte GA-X58a-UD3R motherboard
Intel Xeon X5660 @ 3.8ghz (95w) 1.2v
12gb 6x2gb DDR3 RAM @ 1333mhz 1.5v
XFX R9 280x (requires 750w, recommends 850w)
1 Blu-Ray Drive
2 DVD-RW Drives
6 120MM Case Fans
1 HDD
1 Fan Controller

Thanks for all the help!

What psu do you have currently?
600W should be more than enough if it's a quality psu, you may have some oc headroom too.

I have an old Rosewill 600w PSU. I would have to upgrade the PSU regardless. Only has 2x 6pin PCI-e, no 8pin PCIe.

The way some GPUs power requirements are quoted vary greatly.  Some will say 650 watts which means the value is what is estimated with the GPU and Motherboard and all others in a PC would require.

What I usually do go the Manufactures website and see if they quote the real TDP (total max power at full normal load) for a GPU.  By Manufacture [MFG] I mean compare GPU Chip MFG and card MFG and see if they make sense.  Hope this helps.

The EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2, CORSAIR HX750 & SeaSonic SS-750KM3 750W are all solid choices.

If your looking for something a bit cheaper, the SeaSonic M12II 750 SS-750AM2 & EVGA SuperNOVA 750 B2 are also really nice psu's.
