Starting with a slab of cold rolled steel from lowes:
(yes i know there are better options, but its a test run)

Making some painfully hand-jammed tool paths a reality.  Took 3 hours PER SIDE to hand jam these tool paths, and just as long to cut each side:

cutout the outer profile:

Other side:

Testing out delrin handles:

Hardening the blade:

after it is quenched:

And finally wrapped with 5-50 cord:

It was just a test run to get my feet wet.  I have no intention of mass producing them since they take SO long to make, not to mention the price of the proper steels is almost $200 alone let alone the almost 7 hours of machining them.  My machine HATES steel, but it can cut it, so I have to adapt the tool paths.

That is way cool.  If I were you doing that, I think I would test out making throwing knives, just a thought.

It cant be perfectly balanced just be removing material on the handle, or adding it (like widening the grip)

Nate, I always wanted that custom kitchen knife, but I'm guessing it'd cost a leg and two arms?

You have to use reverse-anaesthesia, but it's worth it (no it isn't) because well, it's just that awesome right?

Anyway what type of steel is used for that? I assume some sort of uh, tool steel I think it's called?

Looks good. For the handle I have seen some handles that fit on skeleton diving knives, if I am remembering it correctly, that if you want to take some load off of the cutting for the handle you could use that handle shape and just use the pre-made handles for that.

Another handle that was interesting is one that had a 1911 magazine in it for holding survival stuff in it.

Not sure how well it works out but I have seen people make the blades with metal files as well. Depending on the file it can leave an interesting pattern on the thicker parts.
