hello fellow, EVGA forumites.
i'm freaking out a bit right now. i have been playing GTA V for the last 2 days, and i recently bought an EVGA nvidia GTX 960 and i am blown away by the power i get while playing GTA V and DAI.
but tonight, while playing, i decided to turn up MSAA from x2 to x4, and another setting from high to very high, (while i played all night last night and a few hours tonight at very high //high settings with no issues).

i have been running both games at NEAR maxed out, and still getting great frames.

but tonight while playing GTA V, the game made to horrid audio noises, where the sound locked//skipped like "EEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRR-OOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRR" and the screen froze and PC locked up.

is this a heating problem?

i couldn't even ctrl alt del out, or windows key, or alt tab...???

the screen picture was frozen at the time of the event, and there was no sound. i couldn't see my mouse and i had to hard reset my PC.

i was using k boost when it happened.

i have a falcon NW PC.
12g ram
intel cpu 2300 i5 2.8ghz
nvidia EVGA 960 2g
windows 7

i have been monitoring all my gameplay temps in the middle of playing with precision X and i have an aggressive fan speed set.
my GPUs resting tempt is 28 to 32 degrees Celsius.
when running DAI and GTAV with high settings it sits around 48 to 55 degrees.

should i not use kboost while playing these new graphics intensive games?

any tips would be much appreciated.

thanks in advance guys!!!

Completely uninstall precision, reboot pc, retest your games without precision.

its safe to run evga card without precision installed? i didnt even realize there was software liek this when i pulled out my old card i had the newest nvidia drivers DLed already, and uninstalled the drivers, turned off PC then put in the new card and after i booted it up with the 960 in i installed the drivers but didnt have any fan control like i used to w/ my old card? i didnt understand but just assumed it was set to auto...

then my friend, who had been using EVGA cards and PX for a long time said "oh you dont have precision installed, you need to install for any fan control"...
anyways, i will try that, thanks guys.
i'm just new to the EVGA cards as well as precision software and wanted to make sure running k boost was safe.

is there a way to control the power and the fan speed without precision? for example, i usually use K Boost because if i dont, the card seems to try and always throttle down to conserve power/heat etc. so how does the card run without PX installed?

what are the default clock speeds???

i don't know why, but i am just so confused by this software... i have always used nvidia geforce cards, and always just used the basic driver DLs, i just don't get precision X... is it meant mostly for heat management and over clocking? i never had any other cards throttle down while playing. i mean, yeah sometimes i might increase the fan speed manually in nvidia control panel, but other than that...

thanks again, guys, i feel like a dolt. i know this software is simple, maybe its too simple to me and that's why it doesn't make sense... lol

Yes, there is other software out there that can control the power & fan. You need to run your PC without any of the software to see if you still experience crashing without the software installed. Precision isn't required for the card to run normally. Can't answer your clock speed question because I don't know which GPU you have, need a part number for that. Precision is mostly used for heat management, monitoring & overclocking.

thanks again, i will try to run without PX tonight... i kept noticing last night if i owuld change a GFX setting in GTA V or after a while the game would start to lag... but one time afte changing like MSAA from 2 to 4, it got SUPER choppy, like down to 5 FPS, and i noticed the fan wasnt speeding up (like it usually would/should when using more power, because thats how i have the fan curve set) and i would have to fanegle a setting or minimize out and back in, and if//when i heard the fans finally kick back in (run faster) then the game was fine, almost as if the card was withholding power...

    again, thanks, cheers.

    PS Sajin-
saw in another post, you told another to try MSI afterburner, well i DLed it and for the very few mins i have used it, i really dig it so far.
very simple to use. about to fire up GTA V and see if it makes a difference!!!

it has my cor clock running at- 1455
and my memory clock at-        3506

do you suggest over clocking this model card? or should i just stick with monitoring heat and fan speed.
i have NEVER OC'ed, usually im against it, but this card runs so cool when playing a crazy game like GTA V, it usually sticks around 50 degrees C, with a fan speed of 55-60% (while playign the game), that i wonder if i can eek out a tad more power.

    cheers/.

No need to overclock if you're getting acceptable frame rates.

    yeah, f the OC, "L O L".
im very happy with this cards performance and price range. it can handle new heavy weights and makes older games class it up just a tad.

    cheers.

So is your issue resolved by using afterburner instead of precision?
