Once in a while when booting it hangs on the Z97 splash screen for about 30 seconds with the code b4, which according to the manual is "memory training". It does boot up completely.

Is this a warning of real problem or just a harmless annoyance?

Did you set the XMP profile for your ram in the bios? If not do so and see if this stops.

It sounds like you have everything correctly setup. What you have is not normal. I would call tech support 24/7 make sure your board is registered. You will get better support.

In that case try setting the memory timings and DIMM voltage manually instead of using XMP. See if the problems continue.

Support said to underclock the RAM and place them in slots 1 & 3, which is the opposite of what the sticker that was placed on the DIMM slots said. Hopefully that will fix it.

I wasn't paying enough attention when I bought the RAM, but at least I got the 2400 Mhz sticks for the same price.

I was going to suggest that but I saw the sticker also. I am running 2400 Trident X in slots 2 and 4 and it works perfectly. Let me know what happens.

If you have any non-essential USB devices, try a couple boots with them removed.  You could even try flashing one of the secondary BIOS to the newest version for testing too.  Download the BIOS file (here for Win7-64)(Win8-64) and when you've booted into Windows, flip the BIOS switch and run the update file.

Restart and test the system out some more.  If you needed to change your SATA mode or other options, make sure to do that as well.

You can flip the BIOS switch safely when the system is off and when the system is in Windows, don't change it at any other time.

I updated the bios set the RAM to auto and things were fine until this morning when it hung on B4 again.

I think the auto memory settings are wrong. 11-11-11-28-1N. It should at least be be 2N right? The 1600 mhz version of Gskill RipjawsX timings are 9-9-9-24-2N, should I try those? At least the voltage is set correctly(1.5v)

I never touched the SATA options in the bios. The only things I turned off was the M.2 slot and onboard sound.

It happens so infrequently that testing with different settings or removing USB devices(I have the logitech receiver and the USB on my monitor plugged in and no other USB devices) will be rather difficult.

What exactly does the memory training message imply? I couldn't find any information on it at all.

It seems that my cell phone when plugged in the USB is causing the B4 code.

I assume that means the board is okay. Is there a setting in the bios I can change to avoid having to unplug my cell before booting?
