Do yourself a favor and don't buy a "gaming" headset. Grab a nice pair of stereo headphones and slap a modmic on them.

    I reccomend this pair: http://www.amazon.com/JVC...adphones/dp/B0013OWPV4
Great sound and pretty cheap. They're even better than the corsairs.

What tucker recommended would save you money and give you better quality sound over Corsair or SteelSeries headsets.

    This, times 1000.

Don't know what your budget is, but find yourself a good USBDAC - DragonFly comes to mind for its small size and simple construction, then pretty much any pair of headphones will sound better than the sound you'll get from a gaming headset. I use a dragonfly with a pair of Sennheiser HD600's, and a Blue Snowball desktop mic. The dragonfly easily drives the 600s and the positional audio is amazing because open air cans provide a "larger" soundfield than closed cans like G35.

Best part of the DAC is that you can connect any output to them (desktop speakers, over ear cans, earbuds). Really flexible.

    I've been doing this too.
I use a Music Streamer II as my Dac connected to a Fiio desktop headphone AMP. I'm using the B&W P7 as headphones.
Set your game to stereo sound and enjoy.
I will never go back to stereo or 7.1 speakers, 2ch headphones are the way to go.

And really any cheapo usb mic will do. I just left my G35 headphones on the desk with the speaker disabled and the mic left on. I should just order a cheapo mic and connect it to my keyboard...

With Tuckers suggestion, those cans get hot, and make your ears sweat after a short time. Get a Corsair that are more comfortable, and it's easier on the ears. Pay $30 more, and get something good, and that will last a while.

What tucker suggested is just an example of what you can do to have better quality sound. Headsets made by Corsair, Razer, Logitech and SteelSeries can't match.

If it was me, i would probably just buy one of these headsets below.

    Sennheiser G4ME ONE $180 (50-ohm)
Sennheiser G4ME ZERO $190 (150-ohm) if my onboard sound or sound card has a headphone amplifier

Absolutely. My only complaint with them is having to go behind the tower to swap between Headset nad desktop speakers, but the sound quality is SO worth it! I am picking up a surface 3 tomorrow and am going to try out the Dragonfly + Surface combo in my later later on in the day. So unnecessary, but I cant help myself

I use a USB extension cable to bring the Dragonfly up to the desktop for switching out headphones.
