If people start charging for mods even less people will try it out. Steam is just trying to make money from doing nothing.

I say this could have advantages, but it could quickly become a disaster if it's not policed well, and given how greenlight is maintained I have my doubts. But, with this said it's only Bethesda for now. So, any approved Bethesda mods will appear and following this there must be a convenient way for Steam to install and uninstall mods easily. I don't see that happening unless a game is specifically designed for user-based content and the game has a very specific structure and way of implementing and launching them. Some mods are so complex they replace everything or specific settings in specific files for specific hardware... How could this be policed with a guarantee of working? I have doubts... I'm for it, but I'm also quite against it for many reasons. Thanks for sharing.

Yep , it's all about getting that little cut of the action again by Valve for doing nothing ( Steam transaction fee *cough*cough* ) Truly sad how Valve has devolved into nothing but a clearing house for cash .........

boredgunner RIP modding.
One of the most famous mods (SKYUI) announced they were going to go paid-modding. It makes me upset because I donated 5 bucks for his mod. 5 bucks and now he is backstabbing me for more money.

Yeah the same applies to Frostfall and Midas Magic, two absolute must have mods. I feel bad for anyone who donated to these people, you're really getting cheated the most.

Sad thing is most modders have never even received even a penny in donations. Those that have received donations if you pm them chances are they will just give you their mod if you donated to them.

They're putting in the time and effort, why not let them get some cash if they want to? Shouldn't anything near new game release prices, but a couple bucks is more than reasonable. If it's good content, then give the creator what they deserve...

' 30% to valve 45% to bethesda (this was steams idea not bethesda) 25% goes to modders, if you mods requires another mod that is a pay-mod then you that required mod get a portion of the 25%.

nexus and curse both run a donations box and subscription to help pay for servers. I can't check those sites but I can say I have donated to a modders before but never "paid". I also donated toward nexus for servers. They probably do have a bank account, but what are they going to do if one month they get too much donations and next they get no donations. They still have bills to pay if they get donations or not.

They both have donations yes, and they both have adds, both generate huge amounts of money on just the adds alone. When you donate be it the nexus, or some other site, or a modder you donate to their paypal account. Ok put it this way man just in adds the nexus alone generates 8k a day. Do the math for the year.

Modders getting 75% should just be common sense. And most likely, that %75 would be used towards their next project. This and the adblock thing, I'm just getting sick of the BS...

If they're only getting 25% then they should just keep it free IMO. A lot of people buy games because they support mods. If someone creates a fantastic mod that's popular then people should donate money or Valve should should give them a small cut similar to how Google does with Youtube.

Hey modders need money to live too. Many have said 25% is better than 100% of nothing. People do not donate, I started modding in the early to mid 90's with wolf3d/doom, was on and off the Tes Games for years, have not seen a penny for a single mod. The issue is this, someone that ran the biggest mod site was happy with the money they got, didn't push for modders to get a dime or a fair deal, Valve saw this, and has found a way to make money at it that is not for the modders TADA the workshop was born.

I guess thats true, I try to donate to mods I think deserve it. I think its also your time period that maybe the donation thing was not quite developed yet, Nexus seems to have made the donations thing pretty big. I can't remember the name but it basically was a bug fix for several things, he reported making several thousand dollars from donations as the game was crippled by some severe bugs such as alt-tabbing. I really wish there was a best way to get modders money.

Modding was never about making $$$. it's a way for people to give back to the game they love and enjoy. We use to have all kinds of free weapon skins for CS, what did Valve do, they started selling them and blocking modders from adding them to weapons for free.

This is what happens when a developer and publisher gets together and develops a system for them and not the end user. No one playing the game had any interest in this feature. You don't radically change features of something without customer need. This is what happens when they forget who they are developing for. Other companies do this sort of nonsense too -- Microsoft, Nvidia and Ubisoft immediately come to mind. At the top of a development meeting there should be a message in bold red letters. Who is this feature being developed for? If the answer isn't their core target audience of customers they're off on a non-productive design tangent.

This 100%, coming from a modder. And we won, for once I am proud of PC gamers. We handled this the right way.
