Hello everyone,

If I expand one of my RAID0 stripes on my X79-FTW, will it wipe all of the data that originally was on the stripe?

For example, my setup is this:
EVGA X79 FTW Motherboard
2 @ Samsung 840 PRO X 128GB RAID 0 Stripe - Primary OS drive, applications
2 @ Velociraptor 10k RPM X 150GB RAID 0 Stripe - Secondary storage drive, games that I don't play too often, astrophotography photos (staging area after photoshoots)

What I'd like to do, is add a couple more Velociraptor 10k RPM 150GB drives to that stripe, totalling 4 @ Velociraptor 10k RPM 15GB hard drives, but I don't want to do it if it is going to wipe the data that was originally on the stripe.

I *think* the stripe will be fine if I am expanding it like this, but I just want to confirm with EVGA before I start the process.

Thanks!
-Duane

I think it will wipe the current drives when adding additional drives RAID config.  I could be wrong, but the way RAID0 works, I would think it would have to start over when adding drives to your RAID config.

Raid0 splits everything up evenly across the drives being used to give extra performance.

You will need to backup your data to an external drive before modifying the Raid array. It's not a JBOD array, it's Raid 0 and it will wipe the array.

That is me in the picture, anyone else ever pet a live Lion?

With RAID 5 it takes a while to build, but it (shouldn't) wipe data when expanding even with the motherboard's on board RAID. On board RAID is good enough for RAID 0 and 1, but I've had a RAID 5 chip fail on a motherboard before. I couldn't recover any of my 6 terabytes of data (even when using a new, exact same model motherboard), so I only use discreet RAID cards now.

RAID 0 or 1 you should be safe enough for use with games and OS installs. It's off topic info, but it might relevant to you.

Regardless of what you decide to do make a backup of your system drive image. Should anything go wrong you can restore the image back to the expanded array.

Thanks for the info, gents. I haven't done anything to it yet because I don't have anything big enough to hold it right now. We'll see what happens in a few weeks...

So, I have a quick update!!!

I finally purchased 2 X Samsung 850 EVO @ 500GB each. I took an image of my original Samsung 840 PRO STRIPE and stored that image on a secondary drive that I had cleared off. I used Acronis TrueImage to make the image - I had to pay for the software, but they had a deal going something like three PC's for 50$. I've been needing to get a licensed version anyways, and it made the change very easy.

Once I had an image of the drive, I removed the old 840 PRO's and installed my 850 EVO's and rebuilt the array. I was then able to boot to my Acronis USB drive and extract the image I had created to my new stripe, and increase the available space too.

I know this isn't quite what I had talked about doing in the original post, but I thought the update was relevant so figured I'd post it.

Thanks again to everyone who assisted!!! I received a new GTX 970 FTW+ the other day and my gaming rig is now BEASTMODE again.
