I am being upgraded by EVGA from an nForce 680i SLI 775 motherboard to the Z97 FTW under warranty. As a result I am going to need to purchase a new processor, ram and a new SATA CD drive.
For now I am going to re-use my EVGA GeForce GTX 260 graphics card and I'm not looking for state of the art, just fast enough for now and maybe some overclocking down the road. I do plan on upgrading the Video card at a later time. My budget is such that I was looking at the i5 processors, specifically the i5-4430 (which is on the supported list) or the i5-4460 (which is not on the list) $180 +/-. As for Ram I am considering the Kingston HyperX Savage 16GB Kit (2x8GB) 2400MHz DDR3 (I can't tell if it's on the list $140 +/-). I need to stay around $350 / $400 for all parts including a new heat sink (Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO $35) and a new $22 SATA optical drive.

I would like to hear any comments or suggestions anyone has.
Please be aware I built the original rig in 2007 and my build skills have deteriorated since then, so I would call myself a novice at this.

Thank You

I have built 2 systems recently using the i-5 processors .... They are very fast / & capable of most all things you will need to do.  A very, very good price-to-performance ratio.

The only thing I would make sure of is that your core i5 can handle overclocked memory OK... At 2400MHz you will likely need to adjust VSA,IOD and IOA voltages up a bit (these are memory controller related voltages on the CPU), which is normally fine. Just follow up on forums and internet research to see if your older core i5 would likely run well with overclocked memory. Some slower processers may find it a challenge, I think.

Is there a specific reason you are getting 16gb of ram?  I downgraded to 8gb in my newest build because i was never getting into the 16 in my old i5 2500k build and i've yet to hit cap in this one.  Personally i'd take the extra $70 and apply it to the best processor you can get (Or upgrade to a K if you plan to overclock).  I have that exact ram as 1 8GB stick and it works great at 2400mhz on the FTW with my i7 4790k.  My build is in my sig.  Or you can click MODRIGS link to the left.

I agree with cheap, less ram and spend more money on better processor

    Intel i5 are excellent.
People can say what they want but Intel really know to make processors and their price drop much slower than AMD.
After 3 years of use Intel i7 example I could get 2/3 of total price and he will be good at least 2 more years.
Most important thing... enough for any games and no sign of bottleneck.
With AMD you can dream about. Actually Intel save your money if you look from one angle.
If you can pay 8GB of DDR3 instead of 16GB for better processor or K processor do that without thinking.
I have 64bit Windows 7 I didn't saw less than 5GB free for normal every day use, gaming, lot of movies, reading, surfing with 10 browsers, etc...
and I have only 2x4GB. Between 1600 and 2400 only Kingston will see improvement in their budget not you in gaming or any application.

Thanks to everyone for all the good information and suggestions.
I do believe I will be taking the advise on less ram and a better processor.

    @
Would you tell me which i5 processors you used in your builds?

Best if you can afford i5-4690K.
You can compare here, some of them ...4th Generation are launched in Q2 2013, some of them in Q2 2014.
Last models Devils Canon are little better.
Example i5-4690K work on 3.9GHz Turbo, that's pretty nice speed but processor is capable to overclock about 400-500MHz with good cooling, but it's little expensive. If you decide to go on K version better choose i5-4690K Devils Canon than i5-4670K Haswell. It's not big difference but price is same and better choose processor launched in Q2 2014.
Cheaper option is i5-4460 he can work up to 3.4GHz but it's not possible to OC with multi.

    http://ark.intel.com/prod...i5-Processors#@Desktop

They are all very similar, same number of  cores, same L3 Cache, price difference is most because K models capability to OC with multi or
higher base and Turbo clock. i5-4690K most games will not recognize difference between him and some very expensive i7, on Z97 chipset he will work in full shine.
