Zuhl3156 Maybe I'll just RMA it and hope for better quality. It kind of sucks to order a board on sale for the $10 rebate and then have to pay $22 shipping to RMA it.
RMA for what??? I guess I didn't know that MSI covered a card for not having guaranteed overclocks? Cause pretty sure they don't. But waste your money on shipping. They will get your card.. then ship it back.... They will not exchange it. No company with ever say "you will get this over clock or you can send it back...." Otherwise they would just sell it like that to begin with... They sell cards that will last at lower clocks and if you choose to overclock that is you putting stress on the card that now will not last as long

I think a more suggested approach should have been suggesting Zhul lower his clocks a little bit, even though he is not getting what he wants within the cards. Even if he does lower them a tad, it would still be a good overclock.

I am going to move my new board into he primary slot by itself, overvolt and see what I can get out of it. My first board was a fluke and worked great while the second board is running at exactly the advertised specs. Maybe a BIOS flash to the first 980's BIOS will help. This is what I was talking about when I said the GPU chip quality would drop as they released the best chips first. The quality seems to be fizzling out. If I were smart I would have ordered my second board right away.

I dropped Primary board to +140 and kicked Secondary board to +160 to get a balanced performance at 1476 MHz. So far so good. Benchmark scores went up again.Time for some overvolting. I'm going to ram 1.4 vCore down my CPU's throat and see how close I can get to that legendary 5.0 GHz some time today or tomorrow. That should increase my scores in the combined and PhysX tests. http://www.modsrigs.com/detail.aspx?BuildID=34135

MSI gave me a new BIOS so both boards are matched. I noticed a voltage increase from 1.193v to 1.218v that gave me a total boost in MSI's Afterburner of +170 that neither board would handle before. 3DMark11 and Firestike scores are both up and I have room to spare. Keep those +1's coming on my Mods/Rigs page. I need all of the help I can get. Thanks.

I regret my decision getting two EVGA GTX 980 SCs. I had the similar thoughts like you before I got it. But ended up learning the truth.. "Who stares at a chassis when gaming...."

Honestly, SLI is like "learning the way of the samurai" (I have no idea where that came from...). You have to understand it, and sometimes you have change settings to make it right and function right. A lot of times you can't just set SLI maximum performance and think you won't have to change certain things to make every game work right, which is why they allow us to change the advanced settings.

This is very true... I also disable SLi in a lot of games. (mainly older games or games that just dont need that kinda performance)

My PC is like a centerpiece in my apartment. It sits on what is called a "Breakfast Bar" between my kitchen and livingroom. It's where everyone can see it plus it keeps the dust from getting sucked into it from the carpet. I like the way my PC looks with dual video boards and think it looks 'naked' with only one. P.S. Is there anyone with a similar setup I can compare benchmark scores with?

I like your motherboard. Yeah, my CPU at stock 4.4 GHz gives me a big advantage in the benchmark's PhysX scores plus I have Hyper-threading. So far I am liking my results.

My results in games is similar to when I added a second GTX-570 with a Q6600 CPU. My FPS is about the same but the GPU Usage has dropped from 99% ot 50% for each board. It's hard to imagaine how my CPU can't feed this setup.

It isn't a CPU bottleneck, SLI needs a serious overhaul to be more efficient. AMD started using XDMA and their crossfire performance/efficiency has greatly improved

Kidding 90% and 10% nostalgia. All joking aside, definitely do not get another 980 when other new options are right around the corner. And before someone says "Well if you keep waiting for something better, you'll never get anything.", the 390X and 980Ti (Or whatever they decide to call it) are coming very soon and 6-8GB of VRAM sounds a lot more future friendly as opposed to 4GB. You may want to upgrade to 1440p or even 4K in the near future and if you do that with 4GB of VRAM, you will notice it in a lot of games. In GTAV @1440P, the game uses almost 6GB of VRAM for me.

This is what I was trying to say. SLI performance with 980's stink in comparison to how SLI has worked in the past. I would send back that last 980, sell your first one and pick up a Titan X. I know its spendy, but an overclocked Titan X will run just about as fast as 980 sli, but way smoother

Zuhl, this is what most people fail to understand when it comes to SLI, the gpu usage. The only main part that people focus on is the FPS gain, that is all. What most people fail to understand is when your monitor only puts out a max frequency until you get tearing, what good is it to have that FPS gain if your monitor has a limited frequency it cannot go over anyway? The bottom line to SLI is making sure you have a constant frequency at all times without any dips in fps, which everyone knows, or should know
