Seems as is SLI 970 is the sweet spot, even in 4k gaming "The GeForce GTX 970 remains a good GPU for full-HD or QHD gaming even with the recent 'Memorygate' issue fresh in enthusiasts' minds. Available from £255 in reference form and significantly faster once a high-profile partner has given it the OC treatment, such as EVGA with the SSC variant, putting two cards in one system offers enough performance for them to be a viable solution at a lofty 4K resolution.A decent dollop of extra performance isn't compromised by stuttery gaming in the main, and two GTX 970 SSC's throughput is better than a single Titan X and, depending upon title, about the same as the AMD Radeon R9 295X2.Average and minimum framerates don't tell the whole story, though, so while a pair of EVGA GTX 970 SSC cards can be blisteringly fast, a single Titan X, admittedly more expensive, has more consistent performance. We can say this because, more often than not, its worst frames are relatively close to the average framerate at 4K.Where does this leave GTX 970 SLI? It's a good solution if you own a card already and want to indulge in 4K gaming without reducing image quality to a large degree. Such advice applies to today's titles alone; those from next year may expose the 4GB framebuffer available to each GPU.The well-heeled enthusiast is steered towards the Titan X for the best combination of framerate/smoothness/futureproofness at a 4K resolution. Those with more modest budgets can achieve higher framerates with a little more variance by choosing either a Radeon R9 295X2 or two-board GTX 970 run in SLI."

The 970 SLI setup is a great bang for the buck. Costs much less than a Titan X and can outperform it. This is why I went with SLI 970 FTW+s.

If DX12 ends up allowing for memory pooling as has been hinted at by several sources, I imagine the 4GB issues would be rendered mood since the system could treat the two cards as 1 8GB card?
Or in other words, 970s are a great option.

You mean 7GB. If the pooling ram is true then those that went 4way SLI titan X would probably be able to game on 3+ 4k monitors

No. I mean 8 GB. There is an actual 4GB of memory in the card, that .5GB is slower than the rest does not mean it's not there. Thank you for attempting to put words in my mouth though.

Sorry but a 970 is an awful spot for 4K gaming. 4 GB of VRAM is not nearly enough. I am not betting a dime on the VRAM stacking of DX 12 hardly ever coming into play, or anytime soon.

But most can't access it or all of it and when you do if causes the game to stutter, so might as well say it's not even there

I've owned 2 R9 290X's in CFX and 2 GTX 970 SSC's in SLI, i'd have to agree with Nightmare, 4GB is not enough for 4K gaming. In that review they had to kick down some of the settings @ 4K and it skews the overall review since it's not even utilizing the Titan X to it's full potential since they accommodated lower settings due to a limitation of 4GB in the other two competing cards in the round up. I would definitely fork out a little more for a Titan X if I wanted to play games at 4K at this point in time.

Though it's not really just a little more. Titan X is closer to 3 970s in cost.

And most people will be using their 970s for 1080p or 1440p. And I can say running mine at 1440p, they are fantastic for the price.

Agreed, though if you've got the monitor for UHD at this point, then you're probably already running a nice mobo and PSU anyway, yeah?

Eh... A 4K 50" TV with 60Hz@4K capability can be had for under $600 now. Don't have to have a lot of money to run 4K. http://www.bestbuy.com/si...6158&skuId=7501014

don't you need two HDMIs to run at 60Hz @4K and a display that can take two inputs and use them as one?

They should be, I know I was when I was considering it. Cause a 28" running 4K is not making use of the extra resolution, especially when the TV's out right now are capable of the same refresh rates.

I'm thinking of replacing my LG monitor with the Seiki 40" 4K monitor but I wanna wait until the second revision with hdmi 2.0/dp 1.3 comes out. Only thing is I heard the colors look washed out. It was already noticeable going from the Dell U3011 to the LG, another step down and idk. I haven't used a TV as my monitor since 2011 I believe. I prefer monitors. TV prices have come down though. Need to get a Titan X for that 4k gaming though.

RainStryke No, you just need a HDMI cable that is HDMI 1.4 or higher.
I tested this first hand yesterday and I couldn't get it to go over 30Hz. (The display is able to run at 75Hz.) I used a Samsung UHD 42" display and a PlanetWave E series HDMI 1.4a cable. I connected it to my XFX R9 290 ( tri-fire) and yes I was able to run BF4 at Ultra settings around 75-100 FPS (FRAPS) but it was still a bit funky b/c the display was only able to go up to 30Hz. Anything I may be doing wrong?

Make sure your TV's firmware is up to date and make sure AMD supports 4K @ 60Hz. I had the same thing happen to me on my Vizio 4K TV that was capable of 60Hz refresh rates @ 4K and I couldn't get it to recognize 4K on my R9 290X's while others could get it to recognize on Nvidia cards after Vizio pushed out a firmware update.

Well crap! I finally get a 4gb GPU (oops well 3.5gb) and now there is already talk of it not being enough! LOL, Always happens!

I wont be touching 4K, for at least a few gens out. Most likely not until 4K is playable at 120Ghz_monitor...
