Ok, not sure if I got a rotten apple or doing something wrong.
Had a eVGA 660Ti FTW and was happy, no issues
Sunk all my saving into what would be the best gfx card I've ever owned (the new 970 SSC 3975).
So far:
Coil whine from hell
Games hanging/crashing (Pillars of eternity just hangs in options, exciting Defiance blue-screened my machine)
Mouse pointer disappearing in games (Pillars of eternity and Divinity: Original sin)
OSD VERY flaky (Sometimes on, sometimes off, you might be able to turn it off in game but then not back on again, it stays invisible etc.)
Overall lots of little gfx related issues I've never had before.

Win 8, 64 bit, clean install of latest nvidia drivers, no issues before installing the 970.
Any suggestions/ideas are welcome so that I will be able to live with this investment that will ahve to last me a LONG time.

First reset your CPU overclock back down to default. At default check and see if games are crashing. If not very slowly raise your CPU overclock in small increments until you achieve stability at the highest desired CPU overclock. Sometimes a more powerful GPU causes small power fluctuations which requires a re-balance of your overclock.

I had a GTX 970 FTW before and the 970 SSC at least for me has far lower coil whine. I am also interested in what PSU you have because that could also be a factor.

No overclock whatsoever on it, everything is fresh install and factory defaults. No driver overrides, application control etc.

My PSU is a 1 year old Corsair AX760i 760w 80+ Platinum rated.

You're using a Z87 motherboard. Does this have the latest BIOs.

If you have EVGA Precision X installed remove that to include the OSD. Also remove any other similar software (MSI Afterburner). Restart the PC. Retest.

If you have coil whine then you can apply for an advanced RMA and get a new card for free. What's great is they send you a card before you send yours back so your never left without one. To get an RMA, simply call EVGA and they can walk you through the process or just go to http://www.evga.com/community/myProducts and click on "View Details" on your card and do it from there.

Your other problems though would likely not be solved with a be GPU.

I agree with RJ but should add, for clarity reasons, do not reinstall precision before testing. That won't fix the coil whine, but it may fix the crashing and hanging.

Just be aware that you have to provide a credit card/debit card for the to charge the FULL price of the card to, and once you send the old back, you get the money released/refunded. It is never fully withdrawn unless you miss the 30 day return window.

Advanced RMA is a great option of you have the money, but if you spent all of your savings for that one card, I don't know you will have the spare money.

How long have you had the card (date of purchase).

The psu can help cause coil whine also. It may only be a year old, but it could be making it worse. That is not always the case either.

As you say I have no fund at all left. I got the card only yesterday (Friday 17th) but it was bought of eBay US April 28 (bought through a friend in the US and shipped to me here in Sweden (although the USPS managed to send it to Bermuda (?) first)).

Bermuda first... What? lol....

Contact EU support (support button St the top of the page) and you can set up a guest RMA. It will take a while to ship it back, but they will take care of you. The warranty still applies, as long as the person you bought it from had not damaged it.

Thanks, I will look in to it after the weekend but right now I don't think I can even afford the shipping cost. It's kinda sad because I never buy anything but eVGA cards and I've always been happy with price, performance and quality and never really had any reason to complain (support is usually good to).

Just to make 100% sure, this coil whine, is it supposed to be a physical noise from the card itself or a electrical interference noise (I haven't really listened to the case, only to the loud noise from the speakers when the card is under load even if audio isn't being sent to the speakers).

I will try any and all suggestion during the weekend to see what can be done about this.

Coil whine would be coming from inside the case specifically from the card itself. If the sound is strictly coming from the speakers, you are getting electromagnetic interference on the sound board itself. Are you using on board sound?

Never noticed that charge but it's definitely gonna give me some incentive to get the 970 I just RMA'd to the post office pretty quickly...

Onboard/USB headset, no matter what I hear the sound in my speakers.

Running OS Scanner X and Rift now pushing the gfx card and when I mute the amp I hear nothing but a faint fan sound from the case. I guess that rules out coil whine and saves me a possible RMA, but still unfortunately doesn't resolve my issues.

I guess my options then is USB sound only or buying a sound card? (if a separate sound card would be shielded enough not to suffer the same interference?).

I will look into the cabling and see if I can reroute anything to make a difference.

A big thank you Scarlet-Tech, you're patient and a good asset!

I'd also like to add a thank you to rjohnson11, removing Precision X as suggested solved all my game hanging/mouse pointer disappearing problems which is good. It also sucks of course since I really want to run Precision X and use its features.
What would be the latest suggested version that hopefully doesn't cause these issues? v4 versions?

Go into this directory:

C:\Program Files (x86)\EVGA

Delete the precision folder(s) located there.

Reinstall the latest version of precision: http://www.evga.com/precision/
See if all is well

It was a clean install of the latest Precision that caused my problems, I had no previous version installed on this system.

Can someone explain this Precision error in greater detail. I use to love the program, but the latest UI is not user friendly....

I dont care for it either.  I'd recommend a clean uninstall and try Afterburner.  That's what I've had to settle with after the ui change of precision .
