It wasn't too hard to set up a p2pool for myself, but you need to make sure you have enough power to get shares. So running your own server for a usb miner isn't going to get you anywhere. Join mine or one of dozens of other active nodes. On average P2Pool has been finding 1 block per day, it really depends on the user support, lately it seems to go between 1.5-2.5 PH/s which is enough to find blocks, but don't just join up and leave, you literally will see nothing since it's PPLNS. It took me a few days to start earning a good percentage, especially because it doesn't earn a block everyday, but on average it pans out and basically evens out to just a little bit more than any other active mining pool (Most pools pay out around .0125/TH/day and on average I have been getting .015/TH/day). And this way you are supporting the true decentralized bitcoin network directly, which was the point to begin with. And since I set up my own node on a decent computer it is getting me good results. I have actually been getting 2 TH/s+ out of my antminer S4. I tested my setup up to 20 TH/s and it was even giving me 100% power from rented cloud miners. I also have a backup server in case of outage but for the most part you want to join one that has another miner already. Difficulty changes on the network can be quite dramatic, but as long as your mining on an active node that produces at least a few shares a day it will be fine.
