So mid-sunday I noticed my machine just turned off mid-day, like a Windows shut down.  When I went over to turn it back on I smelled something, burning.  I took everything out disconnected the important parts, but left the 660 and 780 plugged in and fired it back up after a dusting with the sides off.  Immediately noticed smoke and a spark above the 780.

I thought it was the PSU, MOBO, or CPU that got fried.  After ordering replacement parts and still not working I started putting things in one by one.  Sure enough the machine refused to turn on with the 780 attached.  Cancer kills not just humans but GPU's :(

Just curious, but I ordered it in September 2013 from Newegg.  Is that a complete loss or is there something I can do?  I'm not a big on refund, return, or RMA kinda guy.  Chalk it up to laziness, but with EVGA bucks I might try weaseling my way into something if it adds up to $0 or if I can do anything at all.

Good times lol

RMA it. It will only cost shipping. It's not like you took a screw driver to it and tried to turn the core around to make it faster.

Things happen, you have a 3 year warranty (unless it was a refurb model, then you had one). You will only have to pay shipping to EVGA, they will pay for it on the way back.

Go forth, RMA, and get back to folding.

Oh right on!  I should really remember all this stuff, but I'm usually too lazy to consider it until after I order new parts to get the rig up and running.  I'll give EVGA a call tomorrow and see what they can do.  Thanks. :D

Absolutely. Let us know what they say. If you have the funds to let them hold, you can cross ship and get the system back online quicker. The only issue is that they hold your money temporarily.

Everyone I've been talking to since has really brought my spirits up.  I find it odd to say that I actually look forward to talking with EVGA tomorrow to RMA a product.

Never thought I'd say that lol.

Folding in and of itself should not cause a card to fail during the warranty period. Sounds to me like a rare failure so the RMA process should have this fixed up for you.

Ya, unless you modified the bios and added voltage above the 1.2v the card sounds defective. Good luck with the RMA i've had to rma a couple ssd's and some other stuff takes no time at all and is usually painless.

Haha yeah I just tried making a joke about it.  I just called them up and they were super nice and fast about it.  Decided to go with the long process since I have a backup GPU and already struggling with in-store credit on the MOBO that I can return.

Just curious but is these smudge marks all around the card indications of a GPU that burned?  Nothing stood out to me when I was asked except that.

I wouldn't worry too much about that seeing as how you're going through the RMA process

bison, your suppose to keep the magic smoke inside the box man! I hope your RMA goes smoothly, I just recently had a MB replaced and it went great. Every time I have had to contact EVGA, it went great.

Haha RMA was a breeze.  I decided to do it the long way (me ship then they ship) by horseback so it'll probably take some time since I'm cheap lol.  I knew there had to be a reason I only buy EVGA GPU's.  Told my buddy about what happened and the process and he's intending on switching to EVGA when he next upgrades his GPU.

I have purchased lots of EVGA GPUs in the past and found the RMA easy for the products they sell. Sure wish we could still purchase the AR version GPUs the lifetime warranty was great.

I've also had some issues with a 780 of mine.  I have two of them, one a FTW and the other an SC.  The FTW has never had any issues, but I'm currently doing my third RMA on the SC.  The first time, which was about a year ago, one of the fans started grinding something fierce.  The second one, about 6 months ago, was pretty much the same as bison's problem- I woke up one morning to that burnt electronics smell and the machine would not power on with the SC plugged in.  I had the same thing happen this past Tuesday.

Fortunately EVGA's RMA process is great, and since I live in SoCal the slow ship time is still pretty fast.

Sorry for the delay, but just wanted to keep you all updated.  Card game in and she's back in full swing F@H again.  I thought about stopping because the way it fried spooked me, but thanks to EVGA's awesome service they made the replacement as trouble free as possible.  You got a lifer out of me, just hope you never go the way of BFG :D

    Some details for those curious.

-Called up customer service morning of April 2nd and spent 5 minutes with a very incredible support tech (Gabriel).  Usually I forget names so that's a tip of the hat.
-Couple hours later my RMA status was finished via email and I could ship the card.
-Shipped it at the end of the day April 2nd
-April 6th they received it via my shipping by horseback (cheap), but it really helps being West Coast.
-April 7th it was verified and shipped a new one on the 8th
-Received package today on the 13th.

Pretty much 10 days doing it the long way.  Would have been faster if I went their dual shipping method, but I wasn't in a rush.  Gotta say I never thought I'd need to ever use a warranty because failures on my part are few and far between, but the fine people at EVGA restored my confidence in the system.  Others should seriously take note!

Thanks again for the support and help from all of you guys on the forums and @ EVGA.  Just incredible.

That's awesome your back to the fold. That has been my limited experience with the RMA process. What did they send back to you, a 780? Depends on what they have in stock.

Haha I crossed my fingers for a 980 because I've heard the glorious stories, but it was just the same old 780 SC, which I'm completely happy about.  It's fun to dream though ;)
