Finally was able to put my 970s under water and now heat no longer being a factor I'm able to so far push them to 1541mhz core 8002 mem with a modded bios.
Stable in 3DMark/11/Vantage and DSR 4k gaming with Dragon Age Inquisition maxed (minus AA).

Noice, Im getting my feet wet as well, my 980 oc to 1495mhz on air at 75c, but I had a bad experience with a modded bios, hopefully with the gpu running cooler I can push it past 1500mhz.

Both mine could do 1500 easy on air but heat was a big problem with anything over that

I found modding your card's to be less troublesome thwn trying to flash a different bios to it

I always thought about going watercooling as well but I always talk myself out of it.
I must have gotten a really good 970, got it oc at 1580mhz and 8002 on memory. Its a 970 ftw+, just got it a few days ago! :)

Nice. What are the temps like? I got the reference model and it seems like so far their limit together is 1541.
I'm not gonna complain, it's alot higher then I got on air and temp don't go over 50 while folding

Card hits mid 60s while gaming and has peeked at 73 doing benchmarks. I still feel like the card could go higher but crashes because of power limit. I'm also using the slave bios on the card as it has 115% power limit instead of the stock 110% on the first bios.

Modded mine to give me 125%
Benching them now at 1546c 4016m using 3dmark11. Temps haven't hit 50c yet

Here with 3x980 and a 240mm (too small for my project) radiator w/ DELTA fans I get max temps at 55ºC with ambient temperature at 33ºC.

I love water cooling as well! Besides running cooler [a great benefit] I watercool for the silence it offers, plus the temp factor. What cards did you go with OP?? I just got my first 970 Sc ACX 2.0. Looking to either step up to a 980 or WC the 970. I made sure to get a model there is a full cover block made[2974]. jepp, you need a bigger rad. 360 or so for 3 cards.

Man, I feel good about my card now.  I have the 980 FTW and running 1502 on air (+110 on the core) and my temps only reaches 60-62* at 40-42% fan speed (pretty quiet at this speed) on BF3/4 and Crysis 3 and without water cooling.  I have a strong feeling that this card would go much further, but it's max voltage is 1.2v.  I'd love to experiment with a modded BIOS, but can't find them or I am looking in all the wrong places.  I am going to redo the paste to see if I can drop the temps a few more degrees making the fan run even slower.

Thanks.  Will a 970 BIOS be ok for the 980?  You see I don't know much about it.

Maybe modding a bios is too advance for you
