Hey guys,

I have an issue where ever since i got my 980's, my system will freeze after a short while in BF4, then i can do hard reboot (hold power button to off) then run the machine again, i an wont see this issue again, until the next day.

This issue started to happen after i got my 980's, did not have this issue with my sapphire 7970's.

I have tried to format and do a full system reinstall many times(win7), and even now, i am running Windows 10, its the same. It happens if i play online or offline.

The temps on the GPU's are fine, and CPU too. This is a strange issue.

What could cause this to happen? And why will it run 100% perfect after the hard reboot?

Specs:
MSI x99s Sli
5930k
Crucial 16gb 2166mhz CL15
2x 980GTX EVGA SC
Evo 120 SSD
Evo250 SSD
LEPA P1700M PSU
Windows 10 (currently) but same issue on Windows 7
All watercooled.

First try and down clock your 980s to reference clocks. If the crashing is resolved then you should rma card or cards due to them not functioning at advertised clocks. If downclocking the cards yield the same crashes then look at cpu or ram clocks.

Nothing is currently overclocked, everything is running stock speeds. This issue didnt show up until i installed the first 980.

I have the GFX 980 FTW, and have no problems with BF4.
    I run Win7 64Bit with 12GB memory.

Win10 is not even beta, could be a million problems.

This has nothing to do with Windows 10, if you actually read what i write, it says, TWICE, Win7. This is a hardware issue causing the freeze, as far as i can figure.

But i need to know if i am the only one.

Win 10 is a big part of it. Maybe a handful of people with this config.
Go back to Win 7, way many more people playing BF4 with that config.

What part of BF4 does it freeze on ???

Also does it freeze on any other game ???
Freeze on any bench marking software ???

What other testes have you done ???

1st thing I would try is to play for a day or so using only 1 of the cards -- then switch it out & play another day w/ the 2nd card

See if you get the same problem on just 1 card, - would narrow down to it possibly being just 1 bad card or a bad SLI bridge .....

When I installed the new card (rma'd card) it did crash.  When that happens, my instinct tells me to go to the Nvidia control panel to check the settings.  One thing I notice was that PhysX was set to the CPU, so I changed that to the 980 and did not have any more issues.  Coincidence - I don't know.  I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but based on my minimal understanding of PhysX, you don't want the CPU doing that work.  Just something to think about.

My 1st 980 FTW just would not run, but the new one is good.

Yeah, no thats not gonna happen. Switching cards means emptying loop and thats outside my interrest at the moment.

Its happend from day one, i know which card i got first, and its sitting second in my setup right now. So disable Sli should take it out the loop.

    Have tried different sli bridges.

Have you tried using another driver?  I'm using xxx.25 because the new driver (and beta one) were causing me problems in some games.  I have 2 980's also.

OK well let me add a little to this, First to the people typing that windows 10 this and that the OP has clearly stated he is running 7 with the issues.  2nd I have the same issue bud!!  I am running to MSI Lightnings 770's in SLI.  I get a hard lock with a sound loop.  So I set all settings to stock.  Same issue!!  So I uninstalled BFH and re-installed after running CC cleaner to get rid of any leftover files.  I have only had 1 hard lock up in 4 days now, and that's gaming 2-6 hrs each day.

I really don't think the reinstall did much but it did seem to quiet the issues down.  There is a long forum on EA about this as well.  From 700-900 series cards.  Laptops and desktops.  Some people think that since its an AMD partnered title that that's the problem and it will be fixed in a driver update.  Sorry I am not digging for the link to that because when I ran CC cleaner, it wiped my browser histories as well.   Hope this helps in your struggle!!

I just wanted to give my .02 as I also run SLI and have had the same issue with BF4.
I found that I needed to increase the voltage a small amount to the cards to stop the crashing/hardlocks.

    I hope this helps.

from what I read here it seems to be somehow SLI related.
it would be worth trying to disable SLI and test with one card.

How much did you up the volt?

    I tried 6mV and 12mV, still crashing.

Gaming with SLi off, has so far (hours gaming) proved to work. Looks like this is a Sli issue with BF4 or nVidia drivers.

How many monitors are you running? If you're only running one monitor is it currently connected to the top video card closest to the CPU socket?

With SLI disabled connect all three to the bottom card then go play BF4. Switch the monitors to the bottom card while your sitting at the desktop.

No, you are not the only one who have had this problem with the 980.  My 2x 680s had no such issues.  I had similar problems and ultimately RMA, the card.  The poster above wants you to downclock your card even from stock settings (say 50-100) and if it runs without issue, then you know for sure it's the card.  It's a well documented issue with the 980.  Check a page or 2 down and you will see other posts about this problem with display port and if you go over to Nvidia forum, you will see and even bigger thread on it.  If so, check to see which BIOS you have and post it here.  I did a search and found on the Nvidia forum where Nvidia came out and stated that an old BIOS was causing the issue.  Did you happen to get your card from Newegg?  I bought my card from Newegg and my theory is they still have old stock with this old BIOS.  If it continues, just save yourself time and headaches and rma it with EVGA.  Check the link below and enjoy.

Both cards are now tested with sli disabled and then played a few hours with screens on each card. No issues.

This is Sli issue. I am going to test older drivers next.
