I'm wondering if this coding/technology is on its way out? I really haven't seen much about it in recent years however it's still being touted by the likes of Creative Labs.

Also, while I'm at it, what is considered the best virtual surround positional audio program? I've been using Razer synapse but am looking for alternatives now that I have a dedicated sound card (Audigy X-Fi Ti).

    Doesn't your driver software provide that?  I have the X-Fi Fatal1ty Professional and it's all built into the Creative Audio Control Panel.

    To answer your question about EAX, it doesn't have to be supported by the game to function as it's enabled on the driver level (I have it enabled). Older technology like Alchemy was designed for Windows Vista because it added features back.

    EAX used to be a set of DirectSound3D library extensions, but it has since been deprecated for EFX, which is a library of OpenAL.
     
    So yes, in essence, EAX is (and has been) dead.

    Yeah, I guess so. I only have the card above and haven't been following the audio technology much, lol.

    its dead in modern games yes, but if you setup a retro gaming PC you can experience it all over again :P
