I've been struggling for the past week trying to figure out why my USB 3.0 header ports aren't working, only to find out the rear USB 3.0 ports are also not working.

I've tried several things:
1) Update the USB 3.0 to the latest version ASM104x-1.16.15.0
2) Downgrade the USB 3.0 drivers to the ASM104x-v1.16.12.0
3) Clear CMOS of BIOS to start clean BIOS v 2.12
4) Upgrade BIOS to v 2.13
5) Disable CMS --> this lead of 5 beeps at POST, so that really didn't work.

I'm not sure if the refurbished motherboard I bought has a problem or if there is something else I can try. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Check your BIOS to make sure both Lan 1 & 2 are enabled as well as Marvell E-Sata & all three USB 3.0 ports and header.  I forget which of those has to be enabled besides the USB 3.0's, but as long as you don't have some other issue going on, enabling the items mentioned should allow your ports to work.

You'll find those settings in the "Advanced" section under "Onboard Device Configuration".

    Hi dbary,
The Lan 1&2 are enabled as well as all the Marvell E-SATA and the USB 3.0 ports plus the header. I read in another thread that everything should be enabled and should work, but no luck so far.

Also to the person who PMed me, I cannot reply as I don't have more than 10 posts yet :(
However, I don't have any of the PCI-E dip switched turned off nor do I have any M2 cards installed.

Try this driver.  It's the latest USB 3.0 driver listed in EVGA's support section.   >>  http://cdn.evga.com/driver/X79-Asmedia_USB3.0.zip

The two versions you mentioned above are older than this one if the version numbers increase in order.  This linked driver version is 1.16.4.0

Also check your device manager and see if anything looks out of the ordinary there.

Had this problem for about a day, Luckily for me it was as simple as re-enabling the ports via the BIOS. My question is what in the world caused them to shut off, lol. I hadnt tweaked any settings and had no forced shutdowns beforehand.

Now that I have everything working, should I even bother with these new drivers or just let the sleeping elephant rest?

Personally, I always try out the latest drivers, BIOS's and firmware revisions.  If they work good, I keep them.  If not, I go back to last good one's.

If you're not having any trouble with what you're using, you could stay where you are, or try the latest.  Up to you...

    Update:
I actually did some troubleshooting on the phone with EVGA's support. I ended up trying the latest drivers again and this time bottom two USB 3.0 ports worked but the motherboard header and the top USB 3.0 ports still failed. I also tried to turn on and off the ports in the BIOS to see if that would help, no luck. I think tried to use a live CD of Ubuntu to see if that would make any difference, no luck there either. Only the bottom back ports worked.

After spending nearly 3 hours trying to test other potential scenarios, disable Marvell sata, disabling devices in the Windows Device Managers, and tweaking other BIOS setting I ended up agreeing with EVGA support tech to RMA the motherboard...Hopefully this will solve the problem because it is a real pain not having those USB 3.0 ports working.

    Hi bcavnaugh,
It's already boxed and labeled and is heading off to UPS tomorrow morning. I ended up putting my old rig back together since I needed a working machine to use in the interim.

If the X79 Dark you send back for RMA service supported Blutooth and EvBot, i would make sure they send the same version back if you care about those features. EVGA removed both features mid production cycle.

Thanks for the advice! I didn't even know there was a difference between the later models. Mine did have Bluetooth and EvBot.

However, the Bluetooth feature didn't work well for me. I ended up using a $3 generic Bluetooth USB stick that had better range and stability than the Atheros chipset that came with the motherboard. I also doubt I'd ever use the EvBot feature as I'm also using a Xeon chip that I can only lightly overclock.

    Good News!
Replacement RMA motherboard came in today. Just installed, and now all the USB 3.0 ports are working!

However that good news was a bit premature. I had a USB power surge in the front USB 3.0 port while copying data from an external hard drive. The front ports stopped working to protect the motherboard, but it wasn't until I did a complete shutdown of power by the power supply...leaving it sit there for a 30 second before turning it back on that the port were working again. Hopefully this was just a one time fluke, but I'll continue to update this thread if it happens again.

At least all the ports are working now

    Update 2:
Well it looks like the front USB header ports are rather flaky. Sometimes they work sometimes they don't.

However a shutdown with a complete powering off of the power supply seems to resolve the issue every time. This wasn't a problem with the previous setup I used in the case, so it is not the physical ports. On the bright side, the rear ports always work, so I might just buy an USB 3.0 extension cable or hub and call it a day.

For whatever reason, USB 3.0 on EVGA's X79 lineup seemed to be a hit or miss thing from reading a lot of the threads since it's launch.  They seem to have improved on it quite a bit with the Dark board, but still not 100% on every system...

That's what I read as well hoping I'd be lucky to avoid the issue. However, given the X79 has already been replaced by the newer X99 platform, this was still the best motherboard I found for under $150 (refurbished). Any other X79 motherboard either wasn't compatible with the Xeon E5-2630 V2 with ECC Memory OR was over $240 for similar or less features that the Dark board offered.

All in all, I'm just glad EVGA's forum and support have been so spectacular. ASUS left me high and dry after a year when a MOSFET chip can burned the board. EVGA on the other hand has been incredibly helpful all the way from the suggestions, to purchase, to RMAs. This I can live with, as powering off a computer and back on again isn't the hardest thing to do ;)

I just ran into a similar issue as described here. My usb 3.0 ports was not recognized by windows 10. No mater what i did reinstalled drivers rebooted nothing seem to work. So i shutdown the system and cut power to the power supply waited ~15 seconds reapply power and the usb ports came back. Must be some sort of power surge protection mechanism.

    Hope this helps someone.

I have the same issue with mine X79 Dark, and the lack of progress/repetitive problems reported by numerous other X79 owners has made me reluctant to RMA it since the 'repaired' boards seem to fare no better, sometimes worse than the m/bs that were returned. Ironically just had a major failure (ultimately it appeared to be a loose Sata cable to the boot drive - again...) that ultimately caused the recovery tools in W10 to eat the boot partition on my SSD.

In recovering from this, I plugged in MS's installation media USB and immediately killed all USB ports/locked the unit from booting.  Ultimately had to remove all USB 3 devices except the MS USB flash drive and all USB 2 devices except mouse/kb to be able to get through post/boot for install.  The only USB 3 port that could 'see' the MS flash drive was on the additional header board that fills in one of the PC card slots.  No main  rear header would accept ANY USB 3 device and boot.

Finally got through it and have Windows 10 back up (barely) but don't really consider the system stable due to the USB 3.0 instability issues.  Ironically EVGA has promised the problem was fixed in every BIOS and drive update.  Improved maybe, but never really fixed.

Looking instead to potentially go to another X79 (Asus?) since I'm not ready to shell out for a move to X99 just yet.

Yes the EVGA X79 Dark is a great Motherboard and you cannot go wrong with the EVGA X99 Classified Motherboard.
All of my X79 Dark & Classified MB are running at tip top shape. My X99 Classified even more so.
