I have decided to upgrade my laptops.  I have purchased 16GB of RAM for each, a hybrid 128GB SSD and a 1TB HHD.  I also want tom replace the CPU and maybe one GPU. not sure let.  A would like to do both of I have these machines apart.  The CPU is not soldered to the motherboard, but I think the GPU is.  Will know that when I get them apart next weekend.  I have two Lenovo laptops, one Y480 and one Y580.  Basically the same ones, but one has a bigger screen.  Pretty much the rest is the same.  The CPUs in each are the i7 3610QM.  The i7 3840QM will fit and it is still a 45watt CPU.  it runs at 2.7 and boosts to 3.7.  The current one goes 2.3 to 3.3.  Do you think these CPUs will make a difference?  Mainly use these as supplemental machines, but use them for Crunching and then mobile computing around the house.  Not sure it worth the $600 investment in these two items.  Was wondering if I am wasting money and should just wait and buy a better laptop?  The GPUs are different, as I would love to replace both or the weakest one, but I feel they are soldered down.

I usually avoid GPU projects on my laptop.  What is iGPU?

Integrated GPU. You can usually fold with your GPU as well. I assume you are folding with these. Do you know if your application makes use of the integrated Intel HD graphics or do these systems have dedicated video cards?

Will it make a difference yes. Will you notice the difference? Perhaps. My question is, does the bios for both machines support the CPU?

I will check the app, but I think it does.

How can I check? I have tried to find out but have not found anything saying one way or the other.

Go to YouTube and find a teardown video of your laptops, you don't have to open it all up yourself, unless you want a game plan.

I have a Dell XPS L501x, when I look up the chipset in CPUZ, it turns out to be an HM55, which by the socket PGA988a can take any processor up to the extreme edition quad-cores-- but if I look up the laptop online for all the options of CPUs that it once had at debut, none of them include a quad-core.

It came with a Core i5-480M, versions of it online could have come with a i5-580M (same specs but a higher turbo boost), though I'd prefer a i7-640M (fastest dual-core for the socket), but Dell never made a version of it for sale online, thus no automatic support.

Prbably the biggest gable in my case is that the socket isn't PGA988a like the processor, it is actually the predecessor PGA989 which is also compatible with PGA988b = Sandy and Ivy Bridge, but the chipset won't support the processor which sucks.

For Intel processors, 0.122 x TDP = Continuous Amps at 12v [source].

Thanks. This is the highest type of processor for this socket. The BIOS looks generic, so I'll look up the BIOS and check that out. It did come with a i7 3830QM, but I need to make sure that is my model. I did not find a video breakdown but I found one where they got through the keyboard breakdown and I have a pretty detailed pictorial I found showing disassembly. I bought this thing almost three years ago. I will also look on the Lenovo support site again.

Actually, that is the i7 3920XM and i7 3940XM that are the highest. They are also unlocked.

Yes, but that processor runs at 55W more than the current 45W of the 3610QM. Need to stick to a rPGA998B socket and 45W. The 3840QM is the fastest at that wattage and that socket type. The heat sinks in my laptop are not designed for unlocked or 55W processors.
