Hi all, fell into a great deal on an x79 dark, and Ive decided to really build something cool as a bit of a swan song to the x79 platform. Right now, in reference to the color scheme of the board, and the fact the that platform is EOL, I'm calling it R.E.D. (Retired and Extremely Dangerous) . Outside of the 980 which is a few months old, and the PSU which I just picked up this past saturday - everything was pretty much sitting around waiting to be auctioned off.

Specs so far:
Corsair Obsidian 750D
EVGA X79 Dark
SuperNova 850G2
GTX 980 ACX2.0
Crucial M500 500GB
4 X 2TB Raid 5 array

Right now I'm leaning towards Kingston HyperX Beast 4x4gb 1866 for ram, but I have no idea which direction I wanted to go for the CPU. I was thinking of dropping a Xeon in here, something along the lines of an e5-1650 or 1660 (not the V2). I have set a budget of 400 for the processor so far. That takes a 4930k out of the equation and most of the v2 xeons. The 1650/60 I'm sure would be plenty badass (its essentially a 3960x) but I cant peg anyone down that has actually used one specifically with this board. Can I pick one of these up with confidence or should I just stick with a 3930k and be done with it?

Its use will be some gaming obviously, but more importantly video encoding and ALMOST 24/7 home server use (Plex, iTunes), which is why I was leaning towards Xeon. Might even Hackintosh it. At first it will be cooled with a Hyper212 Evo I have laying around, until I decide on either a drop in closed loop system like H110, or if I go full bore and custom loop this thing. Havent decided yet but suggestions are welcome.

Thanks in advance,
cpkirkley

I have a couple of pics but will upload them when Ive fleshed it out enough to justify the effort.

Edit - talked myself off the obscure bridge and just decided to go with a 4820k, for now. Might switch to a 4930k by the time I get to the store. Ram has switched to 16GB Mushkin Blackline @ 2400.

Should be a nice build.  Post some pics and specs once you get it done...

Remember to review the http://www.evga.com/support/motherboard/ for what CPU and Memory you can use before you buy.
Keep with the Approved CPUs you will save some headaches. Memory not so much but that is why EVGA has this list.
I would start off with the H100i from the get go.

I use CMZ16GX3M4A2400C9 Set to 2133 and CPU the i7-4960X for True GEN3 support.

Yep, thats why I just went with the 4820 for now - I'm going to be fine with 4 cores until next year, when I'll probably splurge on the 4960 and a second 980 to max out the build for a year or two. Im very impressed with how robust the board is (from a durability standpoint). The person who had the board before me clearly gave zero f*cks about his workmanship and it shows EVERYwhere. So far I've had to straighten a couple of CPU pins out and some of the mounting points were nearly ground to dust from overtightening. Bottom right corner of the board is physically bent, and the Front USB 3 header is missing a pin. If this board hadnt cost me next to nothing Id be really upset about it. I installed the 4820 earlier this afternoon, she booted right up, to my surprise!

I got dreaded 5 beeps initially, but since then its been booting normally. All four banks of memory were detected and XMP profile works. I'm burning the windows install to the USB as we speak and I'll go through that whole schlep tonight.Stress test will go one tomorrow while Im out at a shoot and hopefully will tell me if Im going to keep going on this board or if I need to find a different dark.  I do have pictures of assembly though, just need to run them through the workflow and spit out some JPEGs to post. The Hyper212 looks so out of place on this board, I'll probably just pickup an H110 for the roof of the chassis this weekend. Custom loop sounds great and all, but I don't know if I have another reservoir/hose cleaning in me. Getting too old for that sh*t.

Good stuff. I'm assuming your OC is a full time setting - what are your temps with that H100? Right now,@ stock, temp is hovering around 40 with the Hyper212.  Not ideal, I'm sure Ill need to pick up some new thermal paste and reseat. Im not even going to waste time OC'ing until I pick up a new cooler.

With my 3820 running at 4.5Ghz (which is my summertime setting), my highest core temp while gaming average's in the high 40C's with spikes up to 54C.  Idle temps about 29 - 30C.

Decided to scale back on the PSU. For the time being Im going to use the SuperNOVA 650G1 - as its more than enough for the system as is. Also have to recontact EVGA regarding the I/O shield they mailed out - it appears to be lost in UPS hell.

First post is being updated with some more pictures of the build. I need to track down the red cabling for the G1 series , and either a fan controller or a 140MM PWM fan to replace that obnoxious rear chassis fan.

Yes, full time setting at 4.50 ghz. Have been running at that since the first week I built this system back in Dec of '13.  I do use S3 power mode, so it downclocks at idle desktop to 1.2 ghz.
Core temps:
Idles at 18-20c
Gaming usually runs in the upper 30's to low 40's I think.

This build has been by far, the best system combo I have ever built. You can see it on my Mods Rig page.

Lol, yes we do keep the house pretty cool especially in cold weather, couple of reasons:
I hate high heating bills.
Wife going through the part of life where she has hot flashes - she likes it very cool!

Only problem when it gets hot, air conditioning bills can get up there.

Starting to come together now. Picked up the H100i and a pack of SP120s, along with an AP140 for the rear exhaust. Much less garish looking and CONSIDERABLY quieter.

Until I work the EVGA red sleeved kit into the budget, I picked up a pair of generic sleeves for the 980. Probably wont bother with the 24 pin because the Dark does such a fnatastic job ob keeping that cable of the fricking way. I sear I am not buying a motherboard that doesnt have 24pin setup this way. Next steps are to pick up a cable comb for the red sleeving, and move the raid setup from my external enclosure into the 750D. Also have to decide on whether I trust the onboard RAID controller or not, lol.

Shout out to EVGA support for shipping me the I/O shield free of charge!

Thanks!

I keep trying to look at your rig in VMS and it never shows the search result

BDary, I can see yours - although its showing a 670SLI set-up.

Finally got around to overclocking yesterday - starting relatively conservative - Im at 4.5GHz @ 1.225v, Temps maxed out at 62 on one core after about an hour of non-stop benches, PLA, Catzilla, last 3 3dmarks, Hitman Absolution. I'll get to a 4 block of Prime after I finish working on something that actually pays the bills, lol. The 980 is now OC'ed to 1346/1950 and after benchmark run it topped out at 77 degrees. Might push it a little further, but these settings raised the 3dmark score nearly 12 percent.

Using Geekbench as a quick and dirty barometer, 32 bit Single core of 3870 slots it above the score of 4770k and only about 150 points behind the 4790k, (both 4770 and 4790 are above 5960x!! ) , and in multicore it scored 15804, which slots it in between a 4790k and a 2630 v2.

All this with the Chassis fans running at 60% percent. All this power and all I hear is a little whoosh coming from the corner of my desk! Major change, my last build was truly ****ty-battlestation worthy and I had to leave the case open to keep it cooled properly.

4.50 ghz was the sweet spot for me, I could run it at 4.60 ghz but had to feed it a lot more voltage, am able to run 4.50 ghz at stock vcore.
