While searching around for other CPU projects, I noticed today that Universe@home has some tasks available. Currently, there are only 512 tasks available so I do not think these tasks will last long. There were no tasks available yesterday when I checked.

    I did not realize that the project had gone into production. This is the production site:

    It appears to do alot of I/O. I guess I need to compare numbers with you, but think this isn't a good project for boxes running OS on USB flash drive.

    Maybe I could create an app_config.xml limit the I/O for a better fit. How do you find the Projectname for these WUs?

    <app_config>
    <app>
    <name>Projectname</name>

    You can find the name in the file client_state.xml found in your BOINC directory. The name for this project is universe-xray_sources_v2.

    Here is what I have seen so far with the few tasks that have completed on my hosts.

    920 @ 4.0 GHz HT Off - Windows - 2:01:30 Average
    3930K @ 4.2 GHz HT Off - Linux - 3:00:27 Average
    5960X @ 4.3 GHz HT Off - Windows - 1:45:07 Average

    The tasks run significantly slower in Linux OS. I noticed this on the test project as well.

    For the USB flash drive, if you have stable power and UPS battery backup, you could look into the option of running your BOINC folder in RAM out of /dev/shm. You would have to copy the folder back to flash before shutting down though. This would probably be more beneficial for a system that runs long term for at least a few months without shutdown or reboot.

    Would that be a BOINC client setting? or could you setup for the working directory / checkpoint files to be running on a RAMDisk, like what was done of the [H] Appliance for F@H?

    Took a little peek at this Universe Project, and hooked up one rig to see how they went.

    Only one WU has started, but seems to need a tad over one hour on a 4960X @4,2Ghz HT/ Off.

    It would not be a BOINC feature and would have to be setup manually. If you have all your BOINC files in one folder, you could copy the whole folder over to /dev/shm and then start BOINC from that new location. Something like this in an xterm:

    cp -a ~/boinc /dev/shm
    cd /dev/shm/boinc
    ./boinc --allow_remote_gui_rpc

    Anything in /dev/shm is in RAM so you would want to make sure there is good system stability and battery backup.

    Their server status web page shows zero tasks currently available, and only one in progress.  So appears they haven't released new tasks yet.

    The project developer reported that two issues were identified in the application. I think this is why the next batch of work has not been released yet.
