After you upgrade within the first year, they won't charge you after that. Just make sure you get it within the first year. If your on Win 7, make sure it has SP1 in it.

How is something that is 2 months old "news"?
Not to knock you Xray, but they announced this in January. http://www.cnet.com/news/microsoft-to-deliver-free-windows-10-upgrades/

Somehow these "articles" are months behind. They did the same thing with IE/Spartan. We've known this for months, but they rehash it and post it.

I see they briefly throw in the bit about if you want a fresh install, instead of just an upgrade - they still haven't said that is free or not, they are 'thinking' about what to do.

    near end of article :

There are, though, “edge cases” that add up to a small fraction of Windows users. If you want a fresh copy of Windows 10 to install on a home-built computer or on a virtual machine (like Parallels or VMware Fusion on a Mac), you might have to pay for the operating system. Woodman said, “We never said Windows is free,” but also, “We haven’t made the decision” on whether it will be free for these users, nor what it will cost if it is not free.

Since January 21st, it has been free. There was some confusion on the "for the first year" part, but a subscription version was shot down quick.
    http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2015/01/21/the-next-generation-of-windows-windows-10/
"Today was a monumental day for us on the Windows team because we shared our desire to redefine the relationship we have with you – our customers. We announced that a free upgrade for Windows 10 will be made available to customers running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 who upgrade in the first year after launch.
This is more than a one-time upgrade: once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no cost. With Windows 10, the experience will evolve and get even better over time. We’ll deliver new features when they’re ready, not waiting for the next major release. We think of Windows as a Service – in fact, one could reasonably think of Windows in the next couple of years as one of the largest Internet services on the planet."

I wonder how many things will stop working if I were to upgrade. Can I just dual boot my 7 and this 10? lol

Sorry about that. I had seen the date was 3/27/15 and thought it was updated to include a little more info.
