Yeah, AMD's last merger totally worked out well for them after all.

Right? (The former ATI branch is the only one really doing particularly well)

This has been rumores a few times. I doubt this will happen. Even though Samsung appears to be strong, many Koreans worry if it topples that it may destroy the Korean economy. The fact that their government have urged Samsung to divide and play it safe to ensure continued economic growth just shows it. Buying AMD puts Samsung is a risky position between Intel and Nvidia. Plus doesnt Intel own the x86 patent and has an agreement with AMD, if Samsung was to buy AMD without Intel permission wouldnt that render the x86 agreement void and make the acquisition of AMD useless for Samsung ARM/CPU manufactuaring?

It would put me in a predicament, I like AMD and some of its thinking but I prefer Nvidia. I love Samsung and most of its products. It would br a brand preference battle for me between Nvidia and Samsung.

I see Samsunf influence everywhere in Korea, my apartment is owned by Samsung, all my home security, built-in electronics, and fixtures are Samsung. It is everywhere, and if it falls the country is probably going with it.

I'll believe it when I see it. I've seen so many X buys Y rumors in the last decade that I don't believe any of them anymore.

Samsung has enough on their plate, and agree they should at least break up their panel and mobile.  As for AMD, break up the CPU and GPU divisions , and get a CEO for the CPU side that's not a dumbjazz....

AMD seems to like playing 2nd place, Historiclly with their own design

1994 AMD 5x86 lost to Pentium but was cheaper
1995 K5 lost to Pentium but was cheaper
1996 K6 lost to Pentium II but was cheaper
1997 K6-2 lost to Pentium II but was cheaper
1999 K6-3 lost to Pentium III but was cheaper
1999 Athlon was faster than Pentium III
2000 Athlon T-bird faster than Pentium III Coppermine
2001 Athlon XP faster than P4 400/533 cpus
2002 Athlon XP slower than P4 800 cpu's priced similar
    2003 Athlon 64 faster than P4
    2005 AThlon 64 x2 faster than Pentium D
    2006 Athlon 64 x2 AM2 lost to Core 2, but is cheaper
2007 Phenom lost to Core 2
2008 Phenom II lost to i7 but was cheaper
2008 Athlon II lost to Core 2 but was cheaper
2011 FX lost to Core i3/i5/i7 but cheaper

So really we have the Athlon from 1999 untill 2002, then from A64 in 2003, till 2006, that gives AMD a solid 5 years as top dog, before the 5x86 AMD was simply cloning intel chips the AMD 486 was a reverse engineer, and the older was produced under license from intel. So in AMDs existance competeing in x86, from say 1979 until today, it has ruled the roost 5 years, intel has ruled it the rest of the time, but AMD has always offered a better value than intel

Samsung has proven it can make great components to include mobile CPUs. They might be a company that could turn AMD around if they "wanted" to purchase the company.

I used an AMD chips once or twice and that was it. Now i'll only use Intel CPUs.
As for AMD taking over ATI, i'm sorry i Hate the AMD name vs ATI, and still call them ATI, or AMD/ATI. ATI is too good of a name not to use, and i'm more for anything Nvidia.

If Samsung would buy AMD, they better really be ready for a BIG Fight with Intel and Nvidia, and take things very seriously like they usually do now.

Yeah, i'll only believe it when i actually see it to.

but they'd leave the power users out of the big picture kind of like AMD already does, what good does it do us. Samsung would want their ARM server design, their GPU designs, and would likely close down the x86 production instead of investing billions to catch up. This would leave us with Intel, as VIA hasn't been a competitor since 2001.

I couldn't believe that AMD didn't keep the ATI GPU name. I just can't say AMD GPU without using ATI lol. :P

On the CPU and GPU front I think Samsung could really do a Lot of good, if they took the time to learn from both AMD and Nvidia GPUs, and then really try to revolutionize, as Samsung would also have to take a hard look at how Intel is always on top imo.
