I have a RAID 0 with 4 WD Blacks. Device manager reports as such. However when I go into tools/defrag in maintenance it recognizes as SSD and wants to trim, but optimization is not available I have pinpointed the issue to being: Windows 8.1 64-Bit, and Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver 13. I go to the driver download page on EVGA, and only lists the one Intel Raid Driver. and that's IRST 13.1.0.1058 I've read the version 12 does not have the issue. could I use that on EVGA X99 FTW. Or any other help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You're not suppose to defrag SSD's, doesn't need it and it's the quickest way to destroy them! I believe windows automatically switches off defrag when it detects SSD's

Read OP again - they are NOT ssd's, they are WD Blacks, which are mech drives.

I dont think your raid-0 with four mechanical drives supports trim. I dont think your raid-0 with four mechanical drives supports optimization (for trim). Your OS is reporting your raid as an SSD, should not be. Go online and make a list of optimizations for raid-0 using mechanical drives. Use your list and change manually. I thought a manual defrag would work with your raid-0 mechanical drives. I thought the Optimization feature was just for SSD drives. anyway I have moved away from mechanical drives. chesspc

LazySoft But he said that it was a raid with 4 WD black. They are HDD not SSD. Try dowload the latest RST driver from Intel at https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/24779/Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-Intel-RST-RAID-Driver Nereus Read OP again - they are NOT ssd's, they are WD Blacks, which are mech drives. Firstly, Thanks for reading my post correctly. I did try the latest RST drivers, to no avail. I read that the older 12.0.0.???? drivers do not have the issue. But being the drivers predate the system, I am reluctant to try the RST v12. Again thanks for replying. ---- geek2_21 You're not suppose to defrag SSD's, doesn't need it and it's the quickest way to destroy them! Exactly why I want Windows 8.1 to see my HDD's as HDD's so it will not to trim, but rather defrag. Thanks..

It's funny that my Mech drives have much faster transfer then then SSD. My OS drive is Samsung 850 PRO SSD, the RAID is for games and programs. Benchmark RAID0x4 WD Blacks. Benchmarked the Samsung 850 PRO

no not true. more accurate statement is, 4 mechanical drives in raid-0 bench faster than one SSD. not new info 4 vs 1. chesspc

Have you used Intel Storage Manager Tool to check the drives. Also why does Windows 8 think that they ARE SSD Drives? Also Defrag in Windows 8 can be used on SSD Drives because the OS knows that it is an SSD Drive and it will Trim The Drive.

I have read the old WEI (Windows Experience Index) (Which is still in Win8.1 just not interfaced) is used to test hardware and assume my HDD is an SSD because of the Speed. if this is true, what ignorant way to identify hardware. I've read the beta v14 drivers do not address the issue. I may give it a try. Although I'm not familiar with the source.

Updated to Intel RST BETA 14.0.0.1081, The issue still remains. There has got to be a way to manually set this to identify as HDD. FYI: this is a known issue, and here is the thread in Intel Communities, I cannot login for some reason to post a reply. https://communities.intel.com/thread/55594 Only reason I'm using 8.1 is for upgrade path to Windows 10, Which BTW works great. I did not want to install the tech preview on brand new system. Also 8.1 supports my system much better then Win7. I'm thinking I should have just got the Win7 disk. This OS is making me crazy, stupid charm keep popping up even though I disabled it. I just had to dig my programs folders to get my shortcuts placed. I keep left clicking on start, and its like, Oh No, not again. Hate Win 8.1 It's a child's OS. I've tried to avoid it until now. Anyway that's another topic.

Use the classic start menu software if you want it to look like the old start menu. Luckily they are bring that back in Win 10. All Win 7 & 8 users will get a free pathway to Windows 10. That also includes any pirated copies. Yes, you heard that right. They just announced that the other day.

Yeah I've been with tech preview for quite a while, the menu was working great, then they removed contextual from it. So it gets good, then bad, and so forth. the Start Screen is built into the start menu now. I've been keeping an record of my reports lately http://williamwendland.com/windows-10-my-feedback/#.VQuCDOHEW_Y When you click start it looks like this.

Not really a perfect solution but resolved using Intel Rapid Storage Technology v 12.9.0.1001 I am defragmenting my RAID0 as we speak. Wish Intel or Microsoft would fix this issue.

Didn't catch this topic till now but yes @mr_scary Intel Rapid Storage Technology v 12.9.0.1001 will solve the issue. I had the exact same issue as you and it drove me nuts. So far no future release of the IRST has fixed the issue. Here's to the future! EDIT: Not to highjack the thread but I thought that this might be the place to ask. I was about to update my BIOS to latest and was wondering if I could transfer over my raid setups to the one on the bios now instead of the IRST software. Does anybody know if this is possible?

I don't know if it will work, I have been able to transfer raid in the past, but it does not always work. If you do try it, Enable raid and and boot up. you may need to slipstream the drivers, or install them before moving the raid. It's also going to make a difference if it's tour OS, or just storage. You'd probably have a better chance if it's storage. I've never lost a raid by doing it, but it did not always work. just do not go into raid manager and set it up. otherwise it will reformat the raid. EDIT** not sure what you mean by using the raid on the bios, and not IRST.. If you are worried you might lose your RAID after a BIOS setup, I suggest you: - DO NOT GO INTO RAID MANAGER eg.. [control] + I - DO enable raid in the BIOS. - It should just work without having to control I and configure the RAID again. cause that will delete your current raid array. I usually just enable raid, then hook up the drives, and it works. the config file is still in the drives reserve files. I don't know how much I can stress that, DO NOT GO INTO {CONTOL} + {I} that's why people lose their raid.. You should always back up the data before attempting this. In fact I have done numerous BIOS updates, and the raid stayed in tact.

Intel still has not fixed this issue. It's like they would rather wait until nobody uses mech drives anymore instead fixing the issue at hand.

I know this is an old thread, but I resolved this issue by upgrading my drives. I was using: 4 Western Digital Black (SATA2/3G) 32MB/500GB in RAID0 - Having the issue "Windows 10 Recognizes RAID0 HDD as an SSD" Upgraded to: 5 Western Digital Black (SATA3/6G) 64MB/1TB in RAID0 - No more issues with drive optimiser hdd as ssd issue. I guess it was an issue with the older SATA2 drives. just wanted to update this thread in case someone was searching the issue.

Windows 8.1 & 10 Trims SSD Drives and Defrags Standard Hard Drives. They Do Not Defrag SSD Drives like back in Windows 7. I Start up in Safe Mode to Defrag my Raid, this may work on your setup as well. Also make sure you do not Mix SSD and Standard SATA Drives on the Same Channel on the Raid Card.

It's a Samsung 850 PRO running on AHCI with Rapid mode. Basically its an SSD with RAM Cache. it isn't this fast anymore after firmware & software updates. Here's the latest bench on X99 BIOS:2.02 where as BIOS:2.04 breaks the IOPS very badly bcavnaugh Windows 8.1 & 10 Trims SSD Drives and Defrags Standard Hard Drives. Mine is all sorted out now. before it would have the trim option, but would be greyed out. I was having to use the command line to defrag the RAID. ( defrag /D /U /V G: ) where G:/ is my RAID0.
