Asking for thoughts, opinions and general knowledge on RAM specifications as they relate to overall speed of a system.

Which RAM would be faster in a socket 1150,  Z97 system w/ i7-4790K ? (specifically: Asus Z97-WS motherboard) & (CORSAIR Vengeance Pro RAM)

1)  32GB, 4x8GB DDR3 2400MHz PC3 19200, CAS Latency: 11  Timing: 11-13-13-31

2)  32GB, 4X8GB DDR3 1866 MHz PC3 14900, CAS Latency: 9   Timing:  9-10-9-27

2400MHz is (+28.6% faster) than 1866MHz

But the lower 1866 MHz RAM uses less clock cycles (latency) [-18%, -23%, -30.7%, -13%] {clocks -2, -3, -4, -4}

So, which matters the most MHz or Latency? (measurable, overall system speed is the issue here; benchmark & gaming)

Thanks in advance for your help.

Stock timing or OC the RAM?

Pushing the MHz any?

As my signature shows; I like G. Skill also.  Just could not find any at the same price to timing /MHz as the Corsair.

Current G. Skill are 1600 and I'm running: Ripjaws DDR3 OC@ 1870 9,9,9,24,1T,

Intel platforms perform better with higher MHz than lower latency.

Seems CAS plays alot more than mhz tho take mhz with cas. See the link a above.

For discrete GPU users, recommending any kit over another is a tough call. In light of daily workloads, a good DDR3-1866 C9 MHz kit will hit the curve on the right spot to remain cost effective. Users with a few extra dollars in their back pocket might look towards 2133 C9/2400 C10, which moves a little up the curve and has the potential should a game come out that is heavily memory dependent. Ultimately the same advice also applies to multi-GPU users as well as IGP: avoid 1600 MHz and below.

Thanks for the link - is a good read as it adresses my concern for value and not a "Numbers Parade"

Still would like to hear from more members.

In my case newegg has some good values for RAM that I found like the ones in the opening post.  Would have gone with G Skill if they priced & timed better.

I don't think you're going to notice it with either , but generally the faster Mhz speed is going to come out ahead.  That would be my choice ( 2400 )

I should also add that I am running 2-way SLI with a pair of EVGA GTX 780Ti Kingpins and may go 3-way SLI if another Kingpin presents itself at a good - "can't pass this up" kind of price.

My research has shown 2-way SLI to be the sweat spot for price/ performance with only a very small increase with 3-way SLI.

I will mostly do 3D modeling with Solidworks, gaming, and general benchmarking because I like solving puzzles.  (not buying workstation GPUs for home office - too much $$$$$$)

My RAM budget is ~$300 USD; more can be spent if I see the Value in it.

Just ready to retire (hand down the family tree or sell) the current X58 i7-950 based system in my signature.  It just will not die (happy it is so stable) and until l replace it, I will not get crazy on Air to see what is possible.

New ASUS Z97-WS just arrived today.  Waiting on Silicon Lottery delidded 4790K 4.8 GHz CPU and Swiftech H240-X cooler to arrive.

I am aiming for 5.2GHz if the cooler will do the job and the CPU can take it and still be rock solid - stable.

Asus Z97-WS motherboard?

Is a Starting Point, that is you should at least make sure your memory is supported before you buy it.
Being an ASUS Motherboard you may want the ask them as well.

Yes, my 50th custom build over many years. (remember when a 486-DX2-66 was a Hot CPU?)

As a Automation Project Engineer - I always read the technical specifications and approved list of parts.  (experience means you've made that mistake before)

I'll try to keep my tears of joy off of my new Asus Z97-WS & Corsair 760T case that arrived today.

Thanks for the heads up - but I was way ahead of you there.

Strange that the RAM Mfg QVL list and Asus QVL list do not always agree on what is approved.

That and I also remember that on the 80286 you had to add the 80287 chip in its own CPU Socket.

Yes, but the were a different kind of HOT.  You could multitask; crunch numbers and warm your lunch.
Dial-up really meant Dialing (not touch tone - did not exist) the corded phone and placing the hand-set in the "cups" to connect terminal with the remote Mainframe..

Thanks for all of the input fellow EVGA members.

Still a Tie between the Corsair in OP and G. Skill in kitted 32GB Ram.

Time to make a last check of pricing and place the order.

Leaning towards the 2400 MHz

So, in my OP we get this result.
1866/9=207.33

2400/11=218.18   Highest result - Making this the better RAM choice

 http://www.anandtech.com/show/7364/memory-scaling-on-haswell/10
excerpt:
MHz Matters more than tCL, unless you compare over large MHz ranges
When discussing memory kits, there is often little difference in our testing when comparing different Command Rate numbers – the only issues ever came along with DDR3-1333 C9 and DDR3-1600 C11, which we already suggested are best avoided.  Even still, above DDR3-2400 the benefits are minimal at best, with perhaps a few % points afforded in multiple GPU setups.
However, tCL might play a role when comparing large MHz differences, such as 2400 C12 vs. 1866 C8.  In order to provide an apt comparison, I mentally use a ‘performance index’, which is a value of MHz divided by tCL:

 excerpt 2:

Remember the Order of Importance
As I mentioned at the beginning of this overview, the order of importance for memory should be:
1.      Amount of memory
2.      Number of sticks of memory
3.      Placement of those sticks in the motherboard
4.      The MHz of the memory
5.      If XMP/AMP is enabled
6.      The subtimings of the memory
I would always suggest a user buy more memory if they need it over buying a smaller amount of faster memory.  For gamers, common advice to hear on forums is to take sum of the memory of your GPUs and add 4GB or so for Windows 7/8 – that should be the minimum amount of memory in your system.  For most single GPU gamers that would put the number at 8GB (for anything bar a Titan or dual GPU), or dual GPU gamers, above 8GB (suggestion is to stick to a power of two)

After reading the Anandtech article in the above post; I decided not to purchase two sets of 16GB Corsair RAM and the 32GB set was an $80.00 premium over the 2 16GB sets -yikes.

And the winner for my RAM needs is:
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200) Desktop Memory Model F3-2400C11Q-32GXM
DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200)
Timing 11-13-13-31
Cas Latency 11
Voltage 1.65V

Thanks again for the Help fellow EVGA form members!

Full circle; close the loop sort of thing.  Maybe I am OCD - Nope just a type A engineer.

Like to finish what I start, while helping anyone else that happens upon this post; when looking for their RAM answers.

The tomshardware.com  links to the RAM articles brought everything into focus; including the dangers of buying separate 16GB kits instead of one 32GB kit.

So, should I start a build log to post my results?

Just received the majority of my toys today; still waiting on the Swiftech H240-X cooler - the last part of the puzzle. (my first underwater CPU build)

Hope to push the 4790K to 5.2GHz with this build.

Besides I do not run through the EVGA posts, placing (+1) and other low value (3 or 4 letter comments) just to increase my post count - as seems to be so prevalent.
Nice Avatar - that handball clip is funny.   See you around the net.

I would go with two sets of the Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3-1866 2x8GB packs (16GB) that Newegg has on sale, personally.

I would go with two sets of the Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3-1866 2x8GB packs (16GB) that Newegg has on sale, personally.

I went with a curve ball and chose the G. Skill 32GB kit mentioned below for only $10 more than cost of 2 - 16GB kits- Corsair Vengeance Pros. - you mentioned.  Also at newegg on sale.

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200) Desktop Memory Model F3-2400C11Q-32GXM
DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200)
Timing 11-13-13-31
Cas Latency 11
Voltage 1.65V

Or was your comment from the first post; before I mentioned the G Skill 2400; in post #17?  I am hopping they will give an edge to my 2-way SLI and OC the 4790K.

Bummer - FedEx is weather delayed in Memphis since yesterday & my RAM did not make it to Delaware.

Why I've grown fond of saying: "When it absolutely doesn't have to be there, Go with FedEx"

Wish Newegg gave customers the choice of shippers; I have always gotten better service from UPS.
