So I'd like your opinion on a new build. My GTX 690 is showing its age and I'm getting the upgrade bug. Here's the system I'm looking at building:

Mobo: Asus Z97-A
CPU: i7-4790K
Mem: 16GB DDR3 2133
PSU: eVGA SuperNOVA 1000 P2 80 Plus
GPU: SLI 2xGTX 980 FTW ATX 2.0

My question is: is it worth waiting for Intel Skylake? I was fine waiting until I heard that Skylake was delayed until Q3 2015. I'm just not sure how much of a jump in performance a Skylake system would see over the one listed above. Plus there's the consideration that Haswell is proven technology and Skylake would probably have some bugs to work out initially anyway, adding a few months.

My urge to upgrade is based on some of the more recent titles that have been released, namely AC: Unity, and Shadows of Mordor. I run a NVIDIA Surround system and both those games would bring my current system to its knees at 5760x1080. Overclocking my 2600k isn't an option (my PSU is on it's last leg) and my current motherboard won't do SLI, plus I'd be VRAM limited at 2GB with the GTX 690 anyway.

I'm putting this in the 600 series forum because I'm sure some of you have hit the VRAM limitation on the 690 and considered upgrading. Any thoughts?

Processor: Intel i7-6700K
GPU: EVGA GTX 1080ti SC2 (11G-P4-6593-KR)
RAM: 16GB G.Skill DDR4-3000
Motherboard: Asus Z170 Ranger
SSD: 400GB Intel 750 Series
Power: EVGA 850w P2
Monitor: Acer X34 @100Hz G-Sync
OS: Windows 10 Home 64-bit

Going from that Duel GPU I would go with a EVGA GeForce GTX TITAN Z or Two EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Superclocked 04G-P4-2982-KR and if you are going to Water Cooling then I would get Two EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Hydro Copper 04G-P4-2989-KR and Right Now They Have Two In Stock.

Sounds like it will be very nice , I just have a question for you -  Why not consider a  LGA 2011-v3 socket cpu & board ?

it may be a slight bit more money but offers more performance in SLI  & newer architecture ( DDR4 , etc... )

I'm sure I'd go with the 900 series; any reason you like the SC over the FTW ACX? The FTW is less money with higher base/boost clocks. I actually wondered why the SC was more expensive, I'm sure there's a reason for it.

I looked at the Haswell-E processors, all 6 and 8 cores. From my research, for gaming, more cores don't really mean better gaming because games don't multi-thread well enough to utilize the extra cores. My understanding is its better to get more clock cycles in a quad core than less on a 6-core. For that purpose, the 4790k seemed to be the best bet. Any experience otherwise?

I like the Blower Style Cooler for SLI over the other Cooler Style. Also that card is a Reference card so you can at a later point install a water block.

You should wait GTX Titan X or dual GTX980 if you want to upgrade GTX690.
More performance will get with dual GTX980 but Titan X is better for longer period and eventually SLI one day because no any chance of memory limitation on any resolution in next 3-4 years.
And I will need to choose some graphic card if I think to play games again as I planned.
