Hello. It's been a while since I last built a PC (2012).

My config still the same from 2012:
i7-3770
8GB Ram
GTX 680 2GB
Some Asus motherboard that I don't remember.

I was waiting to see if NVidia was going to release an 8GB version of GTX 980, but I am tired of waiting... this waiting game never ends and there is always a better GPU around the corner... So I decided to get the regular 4GB GTX 980 Classified and then upgrade to GTX 980 ti maybe next year.

However I decided to built a brand new PC from scratch instead of upgrading. I want everything new.

I'm not up to date with the latest hardware which is why I would appreciate some help from you guys.

Firstly, I will buy an EVGA GTX980 Classified.

Then I want to build a bit of an overkill PC and I need help.

What is the best i7 processor at the moment? I did some basic googling and I found the i7 4790k 4.0Ghz.  Is that the best one or there is something newer?
What about that super expansive i7 Extreme line? Is it worth for gaming or should I stick with the regular i7?

I would be putting at least 16GB of ram.. maybe more.

and I'd like some recommendations regarding the motherboard... I want a good one that will better take advantage of this hardware I'm trying to make.

I'll be playing at 4k, so I need a beast.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Cheers

I would wait till summertime only because all should be settled down and also you will know if the 980Ti is real or not.
Their no Maxwell Ti Card on the table anywhere I have found. Also Intel's new CPU will be coming out as well.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I am tired of this waiting. It's been almost 6 months since I got my 4k screen and my GTX680 can only handle old games at 4k... Still good enough to play almost any game at 1080p, but I want to step up.

But I will wait until the Titan X price is announced. I am now aiming at that. Never mind the 980.

However, I still want to build a new computer... now that the Titan X was announced, I won't have to get the 4GB 980 nor wait for an 8GB version.

I know exactly how you feel, I had a 4K monitor a little while ago and going back to 1080p was just a little depressing after seeing how much more detail you get @ 4K. If you want something right this second, I'd recommend looking into two GTX 980's (EVGA FTW models would suffice) or two R9 290X 8GB cards. If you are willing to wait to see what the Titan X has to offer, I'd also take a second and look into the R9 390X that is expected to be out fairly soon.

To be honest, I wouldn't look at a Titan generation GPU. I would wait out for the GTX 980Ti or whatever they decide to call it. It will give you the same performance of a Titan X when it comes down to gaming and it will be half the price. Titan isn't for gaming specifically and it cost twice as much because they work great as workstation GPU's as well.

If you don't overclock, moving to a i7 4790K could be beneficial to you... Otherwise, if you can get that i7 3770K to about a 4.2-4.5GHz overclock you will be just fine and you won't really see a difference in gaming performance. I just recently upgraded from a i7 3770K to a i7 4790K and I can honestly say, the difference is very minimal from a gaming standpoint. The only reason I upgraded is because I needed a different motherboard and it was actually cheaper for me to upgrade and sell my i7 3770K than it was to buy a better motherboard on the Z77 chipset.

Technically, the best processor out for desktops is the i7 5960X which is a 6 core, 12 thread processor on the X99 chipset with DDR4 memory. This route is a lot more expensive and does not really yield more performance in games. It has potential to be better with a lot of tweaking and overclocking. But this platform is specifically aimed at enthusiast. The Z series chipsets are better for people that are just wanting a rig for gaming.

Moving to 16GB of RAM might be a decent step, i've been considering it too. I'm currently trying to find a good deal on a nice 2X8GB kit that is 2600Mhz or so, but I might end up just sticking with 2400MHz since they are considerably cheaper.

If you plan to start... DDR4 isn't worth the added price tag... if price isn't an issue by all means. If you wanting gaming performance without breaking the bank Z97 all the way. i5 4690K or i7 4790k, 16gigs of ram and your golden.

Re: Help me building my new PC. 2015/03/05 21:22:50 (permalink)
Just started assembling my current project today; after much research I decided on the following:

(FYI X99 & DDR4 is too pricey, use the money saved for a better or second GPU)
(Almost no non-commercial software uses up to or over 4 cores; so I avoided the expense of 6 or 8 core chips - they exist if You NEED them)

    1) Asus Z97-WS MB, LGA 1150, DDR3 RAM, M.2 SSD, 2-way SLI @ 16, 16

    2) Silicon Lottery bind & delid i7-4790K @ 4.8GHz (@ 1.325 VCore & 1.92V CPU input) and trying to get 5.2GHz with my new build - TIM will be Arctic MX-4

    3) G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200) Desktop Memory Model F3-2400C11Q-32GXM,

    4) Keeping my 2-way SLI 780Ti Kingpins - running 4k monitor now

    5) Swiftech H240-X for my first CPU water cooler as it will allow me to expand it in the future if I decide to put my EVGA 2-way SLI 780Ti Kingpins under water in the future.

    6) Corsair 760T case it is impressive & well built

    7) Hoping to reuse my Corsair Pro Gold AX1200W PSU - though I have started to look at the EVGA SuperNOVA 1600 G2 Power Supply - especially if I find a third Kingpin at a I cannot pass this up kind of price.

    8) keeping my Acer 28 inch Monitor (3840X2160) model: XB280HK, supports G-Sync and 4K @ 60Hz & Dell 24 inch (1920 x 1200)

9a) Main drive Samsung Pro 850 256GB SSD [Run non-critical programs & data]
9b) Main drive (when it arrives) SAMSUNG 850 EVO MZ-N5E250BW M.2 250GB SATA III Internal SSD [will run OS & critical programs]

    10) Storage & back up will be a pair of Western Digital BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

    11) DVD / CD Asus DRW24B1ST (19.99 at Micro Center)

    12) Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit (can upgrade to Win 10 for free later)

    13) Gaming Keyboard: Asus Strix Tactic Pro

    14) Gaming mouse Logitech G502 Proteus core

Thanks for the help guys. If someone else wants to give more tips, I'm still interested. I will wait for the Titan X price announcement before deciding what to do.

Titan line is very cool but mostly nice for a numbers parade (IMO); however, they are most definitely a workstation graphics card and not the best for gaming.

I know.. I'm aware of that. But I don't see much option. The 4GB provided by the 980 is not nearly enough for me. I no longer see a 8GB version of 980 coming out anytime soon either. (I would get that)... I am obviously waiting to see the benchmarks of the Titan X.. but the way I see it, it will perform like a 980 with 12GB... even though it costs 2x more than what a 980 12GB would actually cost.

The Titan X is going to be a good deal quicker than the GTX 980, but it's also going to cost about 2.5 times more. There will most likely be a stripped down version of the Titan X to come out soon after it's released, usually within a month or two... and it will cost half as much as the Titan X. You are probably looking at an August 2015 release on that.
