Hey guys, quick question. How do I enable PCI-e Gen3 on the X79 Dark? The board recognizes the 780Ti as a Gen3 card, however according to GPU-z it is only only at Gen 2. Is there a certain BIOS setting? I noticed that one of the settings in the BIOS allows me to set the PCI-e slots to Gen 1, 2, or 3, however I'm not entirely sure it's the correct option. Please help. Thanks!

I thought this issue was remedied with Ivy Bridge-E

That's what I figured. But GPU-Z is saying my 780TI is running at 2.0 only. Even if I run the render test. Can anyone else shed some light on this? I'm using the latest drivers for everything. My NVIDIA driver is 331.82.

You will need to set the slots in BIOS to GEN3. By default the slots are set to GEN2 even with an Ivy Bridge CPU installed. With this change, in theory the 780 Ti should run at PCI-E 3.0. However, NVIDIA has not been very willing to officially support PCI-E 3.0 via LGA2011 and x79. Last I heard only the 780 and Titan were supported officially and only via Ivy Bridge CPUs. If worst comes to worst, you may have to run the NVIDIA GEN3 patch or manually add a key to the registry to enable PCI-E 3.0 support.

I have a question about my setup. First, what exactly is meant by gen1/2/3. Is it reffering to PCIe 1.0/2.0/3.0 ? For me, the main bios page is showing PCIe 3.0 x16 on my cards in slot 1 and slot 3. However in the advanced settings its showing 1 & 3 at gen 2. nvidia Inspector is showing PCIe 3.0 x 16 @ 16 2.0 Should I try and change them to gen 3? 2x EVGA 690 GTX quad sli, i7-4930k.

I don't believe you can run at Gen3 (3.0) with any 600 series cards without running Nvidia's "force gen3 patch". I think it only works on 780's or Titans natively with the last few driver releases on X79 with IB-e.

Says PCI 3.0 on the graphics card box, and after I changed the settings, nvidia inspector and gpu z are now showing it at 3.0. Never ran the nvidia patch.

I am having problems setting my PCI-e lane to 2.0. I have two EVGA 560's in slots 1 & 3 and a 4820K CPU but in the Bois it shows only a 1.0 in the two slots. I set the slots 1 and 3 to be GEN 2 but it stays at 1.0 in the GPU configuration. I have BIOS version 2.07, should I install 2.09? everything else seems to be running fine. Just down loaded GPU-Z and did a stress test with in the GPU-Z utility and it does show the first GPU run at 2.0 but the second card ran at 1.1. Can I assume that when the cards are idle they sit at the lower 1.1 to save power???

Hey guys - I know this post is a little old but I wanted to shed some light on this. This is not an Nvidia issue and is related to the CPU, not the motherboard or video card. Ivy Bridge itself only supports 2.0 but can support 3.0 via the patch (which is just a registry changed to enable it within Windows). I have the Asus Sabortooth x79 board and the 3820 CPU. The CPU on Intel's website labels it as 2.0 with 40 lanes. This means it will do 3.0 but Intel doesn't certify it as a 3.0 PCIe. It can cause the system to crash but I have not run into any issues with the GTX 980 on the board with that processor. Just wanted to provide feedback on this as this post is the top Google search when looking into this problem. Hope this helps anyone that runs into these issues.

crazyrob Unless I missed an update, Nvidia does not officially support pci-e 3.0 on x79 chipset boards, however they do have a utility to enable it at your own risk (some have reported instability issues with it). http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3135/
You do not need this patch with the Intel Core i7 4820K 4930K or 4960X CPU, only the 39xx Set your Bios to GEN3 on all your Slots.

I got this running on my Dark in 3.0 at 4.5G but anything higher and Metro LL will freeze 1 minute into the bench. I actually get better scores at 2.0 with my OC at 4.75g, but I can see the score is looking much higher monitoring the frame rate in Metro LL bench before it locks up. Doesn't kill the system, just lose video in the game. Any suggestions on what to beef up? My Metro LL Score
