X5460 worth it over my Q6600, I'm getting an EVGA 680i motherboard that the guy tells me supports these chips. Is the upgrade worth it, or should i just try to OC my q6600, its a B3.

If the board will support it, which I highly doubt, it would be a much better chip.  The reason I highly doubt it is that the 680i never supported 1333 FSB quad core chips.  On top of the fact that EVGA didnt usually put server chip microcode in their bios versions back then because of the lack of room in the bios.

Buyer beware.

Well, the 680i will support that chip with the mods they have out there: http://www.overclock.net/t/1431723/mod-lga775-support-for-lga771-xeon-cpus  but I wouldn't waste my money on the deal if I already have the q6600. The Xeon is def better but not by enough to make it worth buying....unless your getting a ridiculous deal. As always though, its your dough and you can do as you like. :)

Ya, for that little bit of money its probably worth it, but def more so if you can get a decent overclock out of it that you can use 24/7. The larger L2/core, and overall, I think will def make a difference in a lot of software for ya. Even the stock speed will help a lot but if you can get it to 3.4ghz, the sweet spot, and leave it there your gpu will get the most benefit.

I would just find a Q6600 G0 stepping processor and call it a day.  You could get a QX6850 for about $60. If you do have support for a Xeon, i'd look into a X3230.

The 680i was one of the worst boards to overclock with in that generation, you are probably being limited by the board. You will want to get a X48 board if you want a higher FSB. I remember my 780i was decent, but the X48 was a lot more stable for the more extreme overclocks. My Q6700 was able to hit 3.9GHz on my X48 board.

It's been a long time since i've messed with 775 socket stuff. Also, another thing I remember is the memory controller. If you are running 4 sticks of RAM, your going to limit your OC.

Re: X5460 vs q6600 2015/03/10 16:33:53 (permalink)
candle_86, I fell upon your thread here while searching Google for "x5460 overclock evga 680i"

I have an old evga 680i board used in my home theater PC.   (i.e. computer behind my TV that I use for random stuff, games and movies).  It had an e6600 that I could crank to about 2.8ghz (2.4ghz stock).

I have an x5460 rev.E0 in my possession and a 2x2gb Crucial Ballistic set of ram (4-4-4-12 800mhz 2.0v) along with the 771/775 sticker/adapter thing.    (I also have a Q6600 unused but jumped into the x5460 because I couldn't help myself)

I am hoping to push the x5460 from:

stock
9.5x multiplier/333mhz, 3.16ghz, QDR 1333ghz bus, DDR 800mhz ram, Memory Ratio: Auto

overclock
9.5x multiplier/400mhz , 3.8ghz, QDR 1600ghz bus, DDR 800mhz ram, Memory Ratio: (Linked/Synced)

I may not have all the numbers and terminology correct.

If successful, I may try for 4.0ghz and tinker with DDR 900mhz with slower timings or bump to 2.1v.

Good luck.

I had that board but sold it for a gigabyte ep45 ud3p. I could only get my x5460 to 3.8 on the 680i and now I run stable at 4.5 and can run games at 4.75 but it fails prime after a while. I run all games on ultra with 290x and get around 40-60fps depending on the game.
