So I picked up a couple of the Anniversary Pentiums to play with.

So far I've installed one in a MSI Z87 MPOWER MAX, w/8GB GSKILL 2400MHZ Trident memory modules and an Active water cooling system (+14C).

I can run 4.4GHz @1.285 V, stable and no issues. To run 4.7GHz, this chip needs 1.4V.

Not sure at this time if the chip is just a dud or other issues/settings.I have another chip to try, as well as another motherboard (not water cooled).

I was expecting to get to 5GHz on a chilled system.

IMO, I don't see you getting 5ghz out of this chip.

5Ghz is unlikely even for 4790K's, can forget about it for the much lower binned Pentium. The 4.4Ghz result actually sounds very good for that voltage. Keep in mind some 4790K's require >1.4v just to run at 4.7Ghz, so your expectations are just not realistic. See the voltage tables at http://www.anandtech.com/...7-4790k-and-i5-4690k/2

Overclocking these chips is not an issue of thermals, so even chilled watercooling isn't going to do much. The process and core design are both not optimized for those kinds of clocks or voltage levels.

    Have water, will cool.

It's hard to find any haswells that will get up to 5ghz.

I have a i5 4690K and I can't even get it to 4.7ghz (no matter what vcore it freezes).

However, on pcpartpicker, somebody won the silicon lottery and had his i5 4690K at 5ghz.

Just got one and I also have it on an MSI MPower Max AC Z87 (picked it up for cheaps from Newegg - $97.74 after a promo code).  Anyway, sounds like you and me have the same chip more or less.  4.4 Ghz is fine on 1.275v.  4.6 Ghz crashes on 1.35v.  I don't really want to keep pushing it so I'll settle for 4.4.  Really, from what I've read that's pretty average for a G3258 regardless of cooling.  Its not a heat issue.  I guess since mine's on air (Thermalright True Spirit 140 that I had already) I'm not too upset.  Basically, we didn't get the cherry-picked ones set to the press (and I had a feeling this is what would happen). ;)

Its best to update the BIOS before installing the next family. After purchasing 5 of these, I was able to get 4.8GHz on 1.3V. So it was chip dependent and not really limited by the motherboard. It seemed with the chips that didn't work would get unstable at 4.5GHz and no matter how much voltage (went up to 1.42V), they were just not stable.

You bought five and sent back four until you got a "golden" chip? Lol- no. Wouldn't do that. I upgraded my BIOS before I did anything.

One guy have here on EVGA Z97 Classified with water block and I think 4790K or 4770K overclocked and stable on 5.0GHz - 5000MHz in CPU-Z.
He have water block and on chipset but that's extremely rear with Haswell.

Was asking about the said Pentium G3258 with what GPU?
Pretty sure I didn't say anything about an i7...

GTX 660 at the moment.  Its fine, but I'm replacing it with a GTX 960 tomorrow.  Should be pretty balanced then (the 660 is definitely the weak link now).
