As in not produced by a 3rd party such as EVGA or Zotac or whatever. I know they used to sell them, though that was years ago, and I haven't really heard about it since. Also is there any difference between one of those (if they exist ) and a reference design from another manufacturer?

Nice cooler on the NVIDIA branded 970.

That is what I went with this time due to availability when I was ready to buy. They are really well built cards, good cooler and a backplate.

i dont think there is really much difference between the nvidia reference and the base partner cards, when you get into the higher level cards is when cooler upgrades and such start to happen

All reference designs are manufactured by the same company (whom I don't know). AIB's such as Evga will add stickers\packaging, flash different BIOS's, and possibly install different cooling solutions but all reference PCB's are made by the same OEM.

Personally I prefer EVGA because if I have a question or an issue they have always been there for me.

All manufacturers made and reference modes, MSI, GIGABYTE, EVGA, ASUS, GALAXY, PNY,...all.
Some of them offer only reference and one/two more with better cooling.

Reference models are fine, but now that most manufacturers have done with those like I've seen with the 290X GPUs, where they have the dual, or some even triple-fan HSFs.  It seems that's where all the cool kids are going for.

    Galacticus Prime - PC Specs:
    Intel i7 4790K
    Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
    ASUS Z97 Maximus VII Hero
    Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3-2400 32GB (4 x 8GB)
    EVGA GTX 1080 SC2 iCX
    Corsair HX620W PSU
Cooler Master CM Storm Trooper ATX
1 TB Samsung 850 EVO - Boot and Gaming
    2 TB Crucial MX300 - Storage/Backup
    Pioneer 16x BDR-2209 BD-RE Drive
ASUS ROG Front Base Control Panel
    Windows 10 Pro x64
    Dell UltraSharp 27" U2718Q
    Logitech Z-2300 2.1 THX Speakers
    Logitech G710 KB/Logitech G502 Mouse

That's not really true. That may be true for the first released reference cards, but as time passes, the partner starts manufacturing their own reference models as well. You will see differences in PCB. For instance, the first reference models may have a NVIDIA logo on the PCB but later reference models may have an EVGA logo on the PCB. I think EVGA does a lot of work with Foxconn.
