So, just wondering....going from a x79 Dark to x99 Classy and I hate to rant...but why the crappy I/O shield with the x99 classy? You pay $400 for the top of the line EVGA x99 mobo and you get a crappy I/O shield (stamped and no padding)? Also, why do the x99's not have the nice 1 tab Dimms like the x79 mobo's had? These 2 tab Dimms I can't get the ram out with a video card in the top slot :( All these little things I see right away opening the box and how could the EVGA Engineers not get this right? Seem's too me EVGA's going cheap now :(

My shield seems a bit slanted but doable as well as the ram slots. I just pop the top one off and slowly slide the chip out and when putting it back in, i just snap both ends and force the tab closest to the GPU to close when putting a little pressure down on the ram. Its not that hard but gotta be careful.

I will say I am not pleased with having a few headers not 90 degree while the rest are and only one USB 2.0 header on the MB as I have a few devices that will need more than one. I have a USB extender expansion but some devices don't like sharing. lol

I thought the same about the I/O shield as well but then I hardly look at the back of my computer. Still I like mine. But then we knew what it looked like before we got them. You will also note that the SATA cables are round and mine came flat.

As far as the IO shield, I am not sure why the decision was made on that, personally, it wasn't an issue for me, but I know some it is. Now for the dual latching DIMM slots.... I replied to several of these at launch, basically at the time of launch, these were the very first DDR4 consumer boards and there was simply not the volume available of single latch slots. Down the road if we do any further boards, that is definitely something we are looking into, but these were used at launch due to lack of options. When the Dark was made there were many more options for slots (DDR3) etc. from a manufacturing perspective that did not exist when we were ironing out the design for the X99. I agree that the single latches are definitely better, however you can get RAM in and out without removing your top card, and I have done it myself. This is definitely something we are wanting on future DDR4 boards.

Every other motherboard mfg offers X99 motherboards with single latch slots. Did evga bean counters not want to spend a few extra pennies.

that maybr me and it was a z97. Corsair dominator platinium ram was very very thick. I tested it on my x58 and x79 boards and was difficult to take out of them also. Returned to corsair and they gave me a new set. They said that the pcb was probably not stamped/made correctly and it was thicker than normal.

EVGA said that availability was the issue with the single sided RAM latches, Didn't address the flimsy I/O Shield, and didn't even go as far as to address the major lack of 4 pin fan headers or things like that. This post was made in August, and as you can see, the problems still exist. I did find a quick way to fix all of those issues, and bought a different brand motherboard. I do not agree with EVGA motherboards this round unfortunately. They just aren't quite up to par for their price.

The main part I agree on is the I/O being a bit cheap, but I don't use any fan headers and very few usb ports, simpler with the performance is better for me. I have a main powered usb hub (single port on board) that handles the keyboard, mouse, and such far away next to the recliner lol. We may not agree on ports, headers, or latches, but life is good

I will say that I looked at about 6 other motherboards and they have the same style back plate. So it is not only EVGA. Now, you can pay another $100 and buy a ROG.

I see MSI, ASUS and GIGABYTE have nice painted back I/O Shield on motherboards under $400.

I just ordered the X99 Classified. I'd rather have the tabs at both ends of the DIMM slots. Install the memory first then the graphics cards. I'm not one to continually swap out parts where the dual tabs will cause an issue. I also think the memory is better secured with two locking tabs. Good job EVGA.

I Agree , When I buy motherboards I carefully check that the RAM slots have been properly made with two (2) latches, this is the reason I HATE the ASUS mobos because are made with single latch RAM slots, therefore I NEVER buy ASUS motherboards

Any rational meaningful reason why two locking tabs are better and more "proper" than one? I mean, besides the princessy "I hate" or anecdotal "is better secured"? "Better secured" for what? Atmospheric reentry applications?

The VRM heat sink need retention screws on BOTH side to be properly seated and securely attached to the PCB motherboard, therefore I refuse to buy motherboard made with single latched DIMM slots

So, you just compared an apple to a heat sink? I am very confused. What does the vrm heatsink have to do with dimm slots? I can't tell if you are honestly saying that just to be a troll, lol.

I honestly see no reason to have the single latch dim slots, unless you feel some obligation to remove your RAM all of the time (for reasons beyond my understanding..) When I build a pc, RAM installation always comes before GPU. And with the current price of DDR4 it would be silly to swap ram for anything other than RMA purposes. I do not have the classified but I do have the micro. The plain io shield doesn't bother me because who just stares at the back of their pc? Only thing I wish they did better was add a couple more fan headers, but that is easily remedied with a 4 pin y splitter.

stiltz85I honestly see no reason to have the single latch dim slots, unless you feel some obligation to remove your RAM all of the time (for reasons beyond my understanding..) You got it backwards. There's no reason to have double latched DIMM slots when a single latch works just as well (if not better). Double latches date back to the times when slot contacts were primitive and couldn't handle lengthwise memory stick movement (needed for single-latch insertion). These times are long gone. Double latches do not have any reason to exist anymore. It is not about "removing RAM often", it is about the simple common-sense fact that there's no need to make two latches where only one is needed.

There is no reason to have single latched DIMM slots either. Your logic is flawed, single or double latched.. Works either way and 99% of the time people only install RAM a single time so what is the use of arguing over a feature that works as it is intended to work? Rather silly if you ask me.

The point is that the second latch serves no purpose. This logic is as solid as it ever gets. It is like installing 10 valves into a car's tire. And then, when someone asks why there are 10 valves in this tire when one is perfectly enough, arguing that "there's no reason to keep only one valve", and that "it works either way", and that anyone who claims that one valve in enough follows "flawed logic".

That was the worst argument i have ever seen. You can complain all you want, i am not going to further contribute to whatever crazy point you are trying to make. The fact that you only quote one sentence of my responses tells me that you are too narrow minded to understand my view on the matter. And to reference a latch to "ten valves on a tire".. Mind blowing. Have fun with whatever it is you are trying to do, I'm out.

I like 2 sided latches better. but I can see on this board how clearance could dictate a single latch compromise.
