Bye Bye, Radio Shack, see ya in the80's!

RS, should of went back to a Nerd-Geek Hardware shop, reduced their physical stores, and refocused on a smaller online store....

Radio Shack was a great store for building your own projects. Built my first PC in the '70's' using a Radio Shack kit. I'll miss those stores.

Strip mall electronics can't survive in a world of Best Buy and internet sales.

There aren't many equivalents to Radio Shack if you wanted to buy electrical parts like resistors and potentiometers in a near-by community store.  I'd like to think Gamestop isn't going to eliminate that aspect for the electronic hobbyist.

For Intel processors, 0.122 x TDP = Continuous Amps at 12v [source].

My guess is they just want the locations for cheap.

For the stores they didn't buy, people can score some nice deals on electronics. A local RS store has tons of Arctic Silver 5 tubes for 80% off, and batteries for nickels on the dollar. Some computer fans, lots of USB charging gear, LEDs, etc...

RadioShack's problem is they didn't specialize in anything. They stopped catering to their core demographics and tried to adopt a generic everything electronics store model. But they are never going to out-compete major outlets by selling one of ~5 model TVs, ~20 Remote Controlled toys, and cell phones when a full-size electronics store can carry 20x the selection.

Best Buy itself is having problems surviving, they canceled all plans for big box stores and closed many of them. BB is focusing purely on smaller stores now. So Radioshack which doesn't even have the selection of products certainly wasn't going to have a chance for those customers. On the flipside RS used to be a great place for individual electronic components, and nobody else is competing in that market anymore. I had serious trouble sourcing a power cap locally for my 24" IPS monitor when it's main capacitor blew out, and buying it online was crazy expensive even before shipping costs.
