Hey everyone, It certainly has been a long time since my last build. That was a EVGA 780i board and it has been rock solid for about 9 years now. I don't do much overclocking with it any more, but it's my main desktop now and it still does everything I need. Over the years the memory was increased, video cards upgraded (Now has two 560's in it) and a number of hard disk exchanges, most recently a Samsung 1T SSD. I'm looking to get back into the building hobby, will do some overclocking, programming (Visual Studio), some gaming (not intense), but also plan to use it as a desktop with 3 monitors for work purposes. It might be a bit of overkill, but what are your thoughts? As I said, it's been a LONG time since I've chosen parts for a PC. Will start by using my existing 560's as graphics cards, but plan on upgrading them later. Will be using Win 8.1 with a Win 7 dual boot. Since the 780i is still running so well, will probably use that as a NAS device and put a few hard disks in it. Here's my proposed build. - EVGA X99 Classified (151-HE-E999-KR) LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Extended ATX Intel Motherboard
- Intel Core i7-5930K Haswell-E 6-Core 3.5GHz LGA 2011-v3 140W Desktop Processor BX80648I75930K
- CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (4 x 4GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2800 (PC4-22400) Desktop Memory Model CMK16GX4M4A2800C16R
- CORSAIR Hydro Series H100i Extreme Performance Water/Liquid CPU Cooler. 240mm
- EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 P2 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified 1000W Active PFC ATX12V v2.31/EPS 12V v2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready ECO Thermal Control Full Modular PSU 10 Year Warranty 220-P2-1000-XR NEW Intel 4th Gen CPU Ready Power Supply
- Antec Eleven Hundred V2 Black ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Any thoughts/advice is appreciated!

I would maybe change the case to a newer designed case that are more water cooling ready, better cable management and better air flow, etc. Many cases out there in the market nowadays. I could look around and see but would like to know your budget for a case and what particular size are you interested in or it does not matter, etc.

Needs to be a EATX for the board. Budget - up to about $150.

I think he meant $150 for a case that supports EATX. Though I could be wrong.

Are you talking about the board or the case? stiltz85 I think he meant $150 for a case that supports EATX. Though I could be wrong.
I'm thinking the same thing here but want to be sure.

I used the phanteks enthoo pro case for my build, love it! For $100 you can't go wrong. Great airflow, cable management etc. Look up some reviews you won't be disappointed. Also if you want to save a little look at the 5820k, my buddy has the 5930k and I can tell you clock for clock there is no difference, unless you plan on running 3 or 4 gpu's in the future you might need the PCI lanes. That will also save you another $150...... Just my $.02 hope the info helps you in your build.

OP said he is just into mild gaming, with the other tasks he is wanting to run he would be better off with a better processor, than a higher GPU. If he was just wanting to game then yes z97, although the games I play love the 6 core cpu as well.

Sorry for the confusion, meant needed an EATX sized case for the motherboard. Willing to go to about $150 on the case. Still not sure about the X99 classified or the FTW models of the motherboard. The Antec case looks plenty big on pictures and reviews are good, but will take a close look at your suggestions above. Nanoxia looks great. Hadn't thought about the Thermaltake cube. Thanks all!

Check out the Corsair cases. They make some nice cases and NZXT as well for that budget range.

I dumped their Cases after the 900D because of the thin metal they are now using. The Nanoxia Cases are Sold.

Yeah, my 900D has a bit flex in some areas that I've seen a little bend to it but other than that, its really a solid and great case compared to the custom ones. If budget wasn't an issue, I'd be all over a Caselabs cases. My favorite cases around.

I too wanted a Caselabs Case but I would have to go to their store to shop for what I wanted, over the web their are to many items that you need to select and I would end up with some wrong parts and parts that I really need.

CORSAIR Obsidian 750D support E-ATX, XL-ATX and have space maybe even for server-wider motherboards. Cost 159$. Second good case with lot of space-full tower is Graphite 760T and cost 179$, same support E-ATX, XL-ATX and have lot of space more and holes for standoffs for something wider, HPTX maybe.

I would recommend checking out features other mfg have to offer on X99 motherboards. You will be keeping the motherboard for years to come. Make sure the motherboard you choose has all the features you want. In my opinion EVGA has dropped the ball on it's X99 lineup. EVGA the only mfg that doesn't have single latch (RAM) slots. That makes it a pain to install/remove RAM if you have a GPU in top PCI-E slot. I don't see evga offering a motherboard with as many features all the other mfg do. Example: look at the features on MSI X99S Gaming 7 M.2 & SATA-Express Audio Boost 2, powered by Creative Sound Blaster Cinema 2 Dedicated headphone amplifier USB Audio Power: Super Stable 5V Power & Better Signal Transmission over USB Nice looking I/O Panel Single latch (RAM) slots

While I do agree with the lack of extras on these boards compared to other companies, I also look at customer support. While I have purchased many other brands of motherboards in the past, I went with EVGA due to the customer support. Other companies seem to have really "fallen off" with their support. This is my first EVGA board, and every time I have called or asked a question here on the forums, there is someone here to help. GPU's and PSU's always had great support so might as well support them a little more.

Thanks for all of the tips everyone. I guess once you find something you like and have had positive experience with, it's hard to go elsewhere. My very first build was a 680i board, and that was upgraded by the company to a 780i (for free or a very low cost if I remember). After that, another 780i for my daughter. Each build has been flawless and these have worked (and continue to work) through multiple disk exchanges, reformats, upgrades and whatnot. As the build is going, changed over to a Corsair power supply (Platinum 1000). Still going to give the Antec 1100 V2 case a try (got a great deal), but if there are any issues will do the Thermaltake Cube since I really like that design. Just received the motherboard yesterday. With a little luck I'll get some time to put it together this weekend.
