I have a GTX 285 card that shuts down randomly while playing Mircosoft Flight Sim X, NASCAR 2002 and NASCAR 2013. Sometimes it runs for months without a shut down and other times it shuts down every time I play these games. The screen goes black and all I can do is turn the computer off and restart it. My system has a core i7 processor and 12 gigs of memory. This has been going on since the card was relatively new.  Has anyone experienced this with a card of this vintage?

Do you know the card's average core temperature while gaming? If it tends to run hot, that could be the cause of your issue. If the card runs hot, it could be due to a partially plugged up heatsink (dust and hair), poor heatsink contact (dried out thermal paste or loose screws), poor choice in manual fan control, or poor airflow in your case.

Is your CPU or memory overclocked? Have you tested with half of your system memory removed?

Have you tried increasing the fan speed to maximum or increasing the voltage on the card to see if it helps get rid of the black screen?

Either his system is taking to much continuous power draw exceeding his power supply OR and this what I lean to because of the age of the card the thermal paste has dried out and if youve never cleaned your card before dust in the heatsink causing it to reach its thermal limit causing the system to shut off. run Afterburner or Precision X which ever you prefer and take a look at the temps in an older game like half-life 2. If its over heating you have 2 choices Upgrade OR replace the paste to do that just take out your card take the cover and heatsink off clean out the heatsink and apply new compound if you dont have compound get some along with some thermal pads for the memory chips might as well replace those as well.

*edit* Don't use AS5 its outdated go with Notcua NT-H1

Im not sure about Nascar but FSX is really cpu driven so it may be a cpu bios setup issue, especially since the issue is so intermittent. Did you manually setup your bios or just booted to defaults and went to windows from there? The 285, but most 2xx series cards, were all very good gpu's and were quite good at taking a beating, but that doesn't mean they don't go bad though. Afull list of your system specs and how old those compoonents are would be very helpful for us all too.

Not sure what PSU you have. Also, try using the card in another comp to see if it still happens.

I don't think heat is the problem. I have my temp monitor running and I have one game where the temp gets up to 90+C but does not shut down. In NASCAR 2003 the temp gets up to about 68C and will still shut down at some point. Just doing normal computer stuff it runs at about 59C.
CPU, GPU and memory are not overclocked,
I have not tried taking out half the memory.
I am working on getting the answers to the other suggestions
I did get an RMA on the original GTX285 that prompted this thread. The replacement GTX285 has also shut down a couple of times in the same games. I am not so sure the card is the total problem.

I have been running Dirt 3 all night and the highest the GPU temp got was 92C. It never shut down on me. The GPU fan speed was running at 1875 rpm. This game has never caused the GPU to shut down.
