Altering bios without direct consent and approval by EVGA + EVGA providing you the BIOS update technically voids warranty .If you do something to the card and for some reason you cannot put the "original" factory installed bios on the card to send it back for RMA ,the warranty is voided . Just a heads up for those attempting this ,back up original bios or you risk a card with 0% warranty .

Hence it is preferred to contact EVGA directly via their support and you will get the help needed. They have been pretty fast with responses so far. As for experiencing boost on the core, what do you mean by that? Boost feature is part of 900 series design AFAIK.

I mean by that bc my 970 acx 2.0 has core boost set to 1240mhz after bios update. Kinda odd bc core boost by factory default is 1130mhz i guess need to check specs.. But no far from what i wrote

I don't remember exact values but my default boost clocks for an SC card that I have haven't changed.

Always is better to get it from the EVGA team, by writing to them. Especially that they attach the nvdia flash bios utility along with the vbios. All you have to do is to remove the NVidia driver and run the executable file attached in the zip document (ofcourse, extract the zip file in a folder; if you do not know how to do atleast this much, my advice is to have someone with 'proper' experience).

I just chatted with online support. The rep said there is no new BIOS, and pretty much said everything in this thread is untrue. If an EVGA rep can confirm this new BIOS, maybe that would clear things up. Here is a transcript of the chat: --- James L: Hello LB, how are you doing today? LB: Good. I like to download the latest firmware BIOS for the EVGA GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0 (Part # 04G-P4-2983-KR). James L: Please keep in mind that video card Bios are not treated the same as Motherboard bios. They are rarely updated if at all. If there is a current bios up date for the 900 series cards they will always be available through our forums posted by our product manager. LB: There is one posted here: Bios 84.04.31.00.80 James L: As you can see that there is not confirmed bios form any EVGA rep. If there were a new bios update I would be more than happy to provide that. There is no reason for me to Not. But unfortunately there is not a bios update for the 900 series cardcards LB: Strange. People posting in that thread said that they contacted support, and were emailed the latest the version. James L: Unfortunately this is not true LB: When one is released, will it be posted in the forum with download links? James L: IF one is release. As mentioned video card bios are rarely updated if at allas an example the 780, 780 ti, and 7806gb never had a bios update. ---

Transcript: Jacek L*****, thank you for contacting the EVGA Customer Service Team. My name is James Roman and I will answer your question today. Hello Jacek, I have attached the vBIOS update for your GTX 980 Superclocked ACX 2.0 video card. To install it, please follow these directions exactly: 1. Download the attachment from this email. 2. IMPORTANT: UNINSTALL the NVIDIA Graphics Driver, DO NOT REBOOT. You can do this from Windows "Programs and Features" or from Device Manager. 3. WITHOUT REBOOTING, extract the contents of the .zip file you downloaded above, and run update.exe 4. Press 'y' then 'y' again to begin the flashing process. (This will happen once for each card in the system that can be updated) 5. After the flash process is complete, reboot the PC and reinstall the latest NVIDIA Graphics Drivers. If you fail to follow these directions, you may encounter other issues with the card that may result in the card needing to be replaced. If you have any further questions, please let us know. Regards, EVGA

Hello, We would like to clear up some confusion in regards to Bios updates for the current gtx 980 models. We current have a fix/update that address displayport issues only with various types of monitors. It is not recommend to flash or update the bios for unrelated issues if it is not needed. If anyone should have any issues when using the gtx 980 displayport on various monitors please contact our support team at Support@evga.com so we can look to see if we can provide a fix for your specific model. Once again I do apologize for any confusion, but there is no "general" bios update available for the GTX 980's. Regards,

That is nice of you to justify your misleading James. But you should have told that your customer while contacting you as well. I guess you may not have known about the new bios and what it should / shouldn't be done until this gentleman has insisted and finally posted your notes right on this forum... Just saying... Maybe it is difficult for all of us to be in top with all the updates (hardware / software), but we should not be so 'sure' about everything. I am not blaming or trying to do any mischief here; you could have easily said that you are not aware of any bios updates and you do not recommend to do any updates to your vbios for your GPU especially when there is NO need and you face NO issues whatsoever. Thank you.

JamesL was the same guy who I talked to first saying there is no new revision. Later on, another rep said otherwise and provided the BIOS. With that said, I noticed that the boost clock was indeed reduced by 25Mhz but that can be remedied I guess by OCing. Voltages also behave differently a little bit. Setting the Power settings at 125% does not let the card Boost as much as before. Overall, I feel the card is much more stable at +100/+400Mhz Offset vs the previous BIOS which would give me tons of utilization instability with the same offset. Note that both BIOSes ran full load without issues.

NVM, the BIOS didn't fix the low utilization instability issue. Dota 2 frequently gives a grey screen with my OC that doesn't have any issues with Far Cry 4. Go figure!

I had to reduce my OC from 100/400 to 50/400. No grey screens so far. I'll still keep this BIOS revision because it seems to be less aggressive and doesn't fluctuate as much.

I got exactly the same oc as you and the only games who crashed with it are Fallout 3 (black screen) and far cry 4 because of too high memory oc (far cry 4 has crashed)

I actually requested to get the original BIOS so I can revert back from 84.04.31.00.83. Reason is I do not like having Boost featured turned off. Especially that I haven't noticed any difference in stability. Strangely, the support gave me 84.04.31.00.82 instead of my original 84.04.28.00.80. Still, it behaves similar to the original BIOS that I had as Boost feature is back on. So I am not complaining. Will feedback any differences if found. Would still like to see a proper low utilization fix though. Passing all the most stressful graphics scenes and failing in a light load game is just so bad.

It seems the BIOS from EVGA support which was supposed to be a reference BIOS for the SC ACX 2.0 cards 84.04.31.00.82 was giving me freezes in Far Cry 4. The freezes would happen anywhere in first 5 minutes and as far as 2 hours. I picked up the very original boxed BIOS version 84.04.28.00.80 from Techspot and so far 8 hours straight in Far Cry 4 without a single freeze.

I had the same problem, after a bit of back and forth I finally got linked to the updater, but when I try running it, it crashes instantly (Before it's even started the flashing process) I also got different instructions (Mine said to keep the driver installed), but even when removing the driver it doesn't help.

There is a bios update but you need to call in to get it: Hello,

IMPORTANT: UNINSTALL the NVIDIA Graphics Driver, DO NOT REBOOT. You can do this from Windows "Programs and Features" or from Device Manager. 2. WITHOUT REBOOTING, extract the contents of the .zip file you downloaded above, and run update.exe 3. Press 'y' then 'y' again to begin the flashing process. 4. After the flash process is complete, reboot the PC and reinstall the latest NVIDIA Graphics Drivers.
